compiled from staff and wire reports

Everybody always says that the Mid-American Conference has no respect nationwide because they can’t win the big games in the NCAA Tournament. Well, at least on Thursday, the MAC showed if they have their game shoes on, they can beat anybody and in this case, the Georgetown Hoyas of the Big East Conference.

The 14th seeded Ohio University Bobcats pulled off one of the tournament’ all-time upsets, dominating number 3 Georgetown in Providence, Rhode Island, 97-83. The win over Georgetown was Ohio’s first in the NCAA Tournament since they upset Illinois in 1983 in the first r

The 22-14 Bobcats started this unbelievable run of five straight games, since the beginning of the Mid-American Conference Tournament as the number 9 seed that they’ve had their game shoes on.

They beat one of the Kings of the Big East in Georgetown, who was picked by all the media experts to make a deep run in the NCAA Tournament. Ohio wasn’t going to let those experts tell them they couldn’t beat the Hoyas.

Ohio started shooting from 3-point range, let by Armon Bassett’s 32 points and freshman D.J. Cooper with 23 leading the way. Bassett,  a junior transfer from Indiana, has scored a whopping 148 points in the last five games.

The Bobcats were 13 of 23 from 3-point land with Cooper making 5 of 8 and Bassett going 5 of 10. From the middle of the first half, the Bobcats turned a one-point deficit into a 25-18 lead and they never let the Hoyas closer than seven. The lead grew in the second half to 63-44, the largest of the game. Georgetown ends the season at 23-11.

Ohio now turns it’s attention to Saturday when it’ll play 6th seeded Tennessee, who advanced by beating 11th seeded San Diego State, 62-59.

IN OTHER MIDWEST REGIONAL ACTION

Northern Iowa beat UNLV in Oklahoma City on a clutch shot by  Ali Farokhmanesh and will be moving to the NCAA second round for the first time in 20 years. Northern Iowa moves to 29-4.

KANSAS 90 LEHIGH 74

Lehigh (22-11), making their fourth NCAA appearance, had a memorable day staying with Kansas and trailing only by 6 at halftime in Oklahoma City.

Marcus Morris Kansas (KU)

But Kansas showed why they are the overall #1 seed by using balanced scoring and depth to pull out the win.

Marcus Morris led the way with 26 points and Sherron Collins chipped in 18.

TENNESSEE 62   SAN DIEGO STATE 59
Melvin Goins made his fourth three-point goal with 19 seconds left, helping 6th seeded Tennessee (26-8) to victory over the Aztecs in Providence, Rhode Island.
