Baltic leads Ohio over Northern Illinois, 80-73

Ivo Baltic scored 31 points and grabbed nine rebounds, both career highs, in leading Ohio University to a Mid-American Conference win over Northern Illinois.

Ohio improves to 11-12, 4-5 and Northern Illinois drops to 7-14, 3-6.

A sophomore, Baltic came into the game in Athens, Ohio, averaging 8.7 points per game, scored 21 points in the first half, leading the Bobcats to a 39-30 lead.

Xavier Silas of Northern Illinois, came into the game averaging 24.2 points a game, second in the nation and scored 25 for the Huskies.

Tressel voted top coach in Ohio by peers

The football coaches around the state of Ohio have tremendous respect for Ohio State head coach, Jim Tressel.

Tress, as the players call him, was voted overwhelmingly as the Dispatch Ohio College Football Coach of the Year for winning a share of a sixth straight Big Ten championship with a 12-1 record and a Sugar Bowl championship by beating Arkansas, 31-26.

Coach Tressel had 16 first place votes and 54 total points.

Finishing second was Mount Union’s Larry Kehres with 3 first-place votes and 32 total.

Dean Paul, a Larry Kehres player and former assistant coach at Mount Union, finished 3rd in the voting. The Ohio Northern head coach had 2 first-place votes and 18 total.

Ohio University coach Frank Solich finished fourth garnering two first-plate votes and 13 total.

BOYS HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL: Gahanna remains undefeated beating Lancaster

The Gahanna-Lincoln Lions pushed their record to 15-0 on the season, 9-0 in the Ohio Capital Conference Ohio Division, with a 65-36 win over the visiting Lancaster Golden Gales.

By scoring 13 points in the game, Stevie Taylor became the all-time leading scorer for Gahanna.

Taylor, who will be playing his college basketball at Ohio University next season, upped his career total to 1,270 points and surpassed the record of 1,262 held by Mike Browning (1966-69).

Gahanna has been very good since Taylor stepped foot in the school, going 75-12.

Lancaster having a tough season, dropped to 1-11, 1-7.

Ohio Bobcats lose close game to Kent State

Justin Greene scored 18 points and Kent State used a 6-o run in the final 1:35 of the second half to beat Ohio University in a Mid-American Conference game, 69-66.

The Golden Flashes, now 11-6, 2-1 in the MAC, trailed 66-63 with 1:59 to go when they started the game-winning run.

D.J. Cooper led the Bobcats (8-9, 1-2 MAC) with 17 points.

Miami beats arch-rival Ohio in 3 overtimes

Antonio Ballard scored 26 points, hauled in 12 rebounds and played the entire 55 minutes to help Miami University beat Ohio University in Athens, Ohio.

The RedHawks took the lead for good on a three-point shot by Orlando Williams with 29 seconds left in the 3rd overtime.
