Conference USA member Central Florida, one of Ohio State’s 2012 opponents, beat Ball State of the Mid-American Conference on Friday night in the Beef O’Brady’s Bowl, 38-17.

The game took place at St. Petersburg, Florida at Tropicana Field, home of the Tampa Bay Rays of Major League Baseball.

Central Florida quarterback Blake Bortles threw three touchdowns and ran for another in the contest.

Bortles completed 22 of 33 passes without an interception.

Ball State, which finishes the season at 9-4, had high hopes of winning 10 games for only the third time in school history, but its usually high-scoring offense was held to a season-low point total by a swarming, speedy Knights defense. The Cardinals saw their six-game winning streak come to an end.

Bortles, who led the Knights to a 10-4 record, passed for 272 yards to become the first QB to throw for 3,000 yards since 2002. A solid runner, he also led the team on the ground, rushing nine times for a career-best 80 yards.

Cardinals quarterback Keith Wenning was 22 of 34 passing for 217 yards and two touchdowns.

The Duke Blue Devils, the only team who have beaten Ohio State this year, has replaced Indiana as the Number-1 team in the AP Top 25 poll.

Michigan and Syracuse each moved up one place to second and third respectively. Following them in the top 10 are Arizona, Louisville, Indiana, Ohio State, Florida, Kansas and Illinois.

The Blue Devils have reached #1 at least once in a record 16 seasons under head coach Mike Krzyzewski, and has played more games as the Number-1 ranked team in his 33 seasons (209) than as an unranked team (141).

Wolverines QB Devin Gardner seeking 5th year of eligibility

Michigan Wolverines junior quarterback Devin Gardner is seeking a fifth year of eligibility says his head coach Brady Hoke.

Hoke says that all of the documentation needed for Gardner’s medical red-shirt is being looked over by the Big Ten Conference.

Gardner was recruited as a quarterback by the Wolverines but was moved to wide receiver this season to be on the field at the same time with Denard Robinson. When the play-making Robinson missed several games with a right elbow injury, Gardner took over the QB reins and piloted the team successfully until last Saturday’s 26-21 loss at arch-rival Ohio State. He started the last four games of this season.

Gardner’s year that he is trying to get back is his freshman year when he was limited to three games due to a back injury.

If the NCAA and Big Ten allows his medical hardship, Gardner will be eligible to play in 2013 and 2014.
