The University of Dayton Flyers will be losing two players who were key parts of this year’s team and were being counted on for the future.

Head coach Brian Gregory has announced that freshman guards Juwan Staten and Brandon Spearman are transferring from the program.

“We appreciate Juwan and Brandon’s efforts this season and wish them good luck in their academic and athletic futures,” Gregory said.

Staten, a 6-foot point guard, averaged 8.5 points and 5.4 assists in 35 games (34 starts) in 2010-11. The Dayton native, a graduate of Oak Hill Academy, was a member of the Atlantic 10 All-Rookie Team.

Spearman averaged 2.5 points and 1.2 rebounds in 10.9 minutes of play this year. The 6-foot-3 Chicago Simeon High School graduate played in all 36 games with two starts.

Dayton was 22-14 in 2010-11, and lost to an NCAA Sweet 16 team the Richmond Spiders in the A-10 championship game. UD reached the post-season for the fourth straight year by earning an at-large bid to the NIT.

The Trotwood, Ohio native is entering a senior season that will cap one of the most memorable careers in a Dayton uniform. Already 32nd in career scoring at UD with 1,127 points in just 87 games, he is a two-time NABC All-District selection. Named First Team All-Atlantic 10 in 2009-10, Wright averaged 13.7 points and 7.3 rebounds a game.

Wright also led the team in minutes (28.6), dunks (a school-record 68), blocked shots ( a school-record 53), free throws attempted (185) and free throws made (125). He led Dayton with 29 double-figure games in 2009-2010.

The Flyers have won 75 games since Chris Wright came to the University of Dayton campus for the 2007-2008 seasons. With Wright in the lineup, has defeated 10 BCS teams, including four straight in this year’s run to the NIT title (Cincinnati, Illinois, Mississippi and North Carolina). At UD Arena, the Flyers have won 44 of their last 46 games with him in the lineup.

Dayton returns nine letterwinners from last year’s 25-12 team that won the 2010 NIT, including Wright and NIT MVP Chris Johnson, a Columbus, Ohio native.

The Flyers will also welcome five additional new faces to the program in 2010-2011, led by Oak Hill Academy point guard Juwan Staten.
