Bad start to 2013 by McIlroy continues with withdrawal from Honda Classic; Guthrie leads after two rounds

Northern Ireland golf star Rory McIlroy has not had the start to the PGA Tour season that would suit his taste.

In three tournaments, the 23-year-old fan favorite, missed the cut in Abu Dhabi, lost in the first round of the Match Play Championship and in a bizarre twist on Friday, withdrew from the Honda Classic after 26 holes.

Conflicting stories from the tournament said that McIlroy, the world’s top-ranked golfer, mentally was not ready to play golf or he had a tooth ache.

But the fact is, he walked off the course in the middle of the second round at the Honda Classic in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.

McIlroy was a stunning 7-over-par through eight holes when his second shot went into the water on the 18th hole. He gave his golf club to his caddy, shook hands with his playing partners, turned in the scorecard and walked to the parking lot.

An hour later, his management company issued a statement saying McIlroy was bothered by a sore wisdom tooth.

In other news from the classic, Luke Guthrie shot a 7-under 63 to take a one-shot lead at the halfway point. Guthrie, a University of Illinois product, is at 9-under 131 after two rounds, ahead of Michael Thompson who is second after shooting a 65 on Saturday.

Tiger Woods is nine shots off the lead after shooting his second straight 70 and barely made the cut with a late charge.

Camilo Villegas, the first-round leader, shot a 77 and missed the cut.

22-year-old Rory McIlroy has added another piece of silverware to his trophy cabinet after his famous tee shot at the tenth hole en route to victory in the United States Open Championship was voted by fans as The European Tour Shot of the Month for June.

McIlroy joins the other monthly winners of 2011, Paul Casey in January, Alvaro Quiros for February, David Horsley in March, Matteo Manassero in April and Luke Donald in May.

The shot was met with a raucous reception on the green and the fans of My European Tour have also given it their approval as it received two thirds of the votes pulled.

The winners of each Shot of the Month will be put forward for the European Tour Shot of the Year, won last season by Graeme McDowell for his unforgetable birdie putt on the 16th green of The Celtic Manor Resort which helped Europe regain The Ryder Cup.
