United States Women’s soccer team in tough group for World Cup

(file photo)

The U.S. Women’s soccer team thought it had a tough road just to qualify for the 2011 matches.

The two-time world champions have been placed in probably the toughest group of the World Cup, with North Korea, Sweden and Columbia which is Group C.

The top-ranked United States team was the last to qualify for the 16-nation tournament, beating Italy in a home and home playoff last weekend after being stunned by Mexico in the semifinals of the regional qualifying.

The U.S. women are still a top seed along with Brazil, Germany and Japan.

The Women’s World Cup tournament will be played June 26 to July 17 at nine sites in Germany.

The United States first game is against North Korea on June 28.
