Cleveland State escapes Vermont in NIT play, 63-60

Norris Cole scored 27 points, including the go-ahead basket with 1:23 to go in the game, and the host Cleveland State Vikings beat Vermont, 63-60.

Cole broke a 57-57 game with a driving layup and knocked down four free throws in the final 26 seconds.

Vermont (23-9) had a chance to tie, as Matt Glass’ three-point attempt at the buzzer bounced on the rim four times before falling off.

Cleveland State will play College of Charleston in the next round.

Cleveland State eliminates Wright State in Horizon League tourney

Cleveland State continued to roll in the Horizon League Tournament, with Jeremy Montgomery leading the way with 16 points, beat Ohio rival, Wright State 73-59.

The Vikings put the game away late in the second half, as Norris Cole, their leading scorer, scored 13 points in nine minutes.

The Vikings improved to 26-7.

Wright State, if they don’t receive a postseason bid, says goodbye to four seniors who have kept the program in contention and at the top of the Horizon League, Vaughn Duggins, N’Gai Evans, Cooper Land and Troy Tabler.

The Raiders finish at 19-14.

Cleveland State’s Cole named Horizon League player of week

Cleveland State senior guard Norris Cole, a native of Dayton, Ohio, has been named Horizon League Men’s Basketball Player of the Week for the week ending February 14.

The honor is the fifth of the year for Cole and seventh of his career.

The senior star becomes just the third player in Horizon League history to record five such honors in the same season, joining Rashad Phillips of Detroit and Darin Archbold of Butler in the record books.

Averaging 25.5 points, 3.5 rebounds and 7.5 assists for the week, Cole was responsible in 31 of the Vikings’ 46 made field goals, going 16-of-37 from the floor while handing out 15 assists.

Cleveland State split two road games during the week, winning at Wright State and losing in the Sears BracketBusters game at Old Dominion.

Norris Cole has 40/20 game; leads Cleveland State over arch-rival Youngstown State

The Cleveland State Vikings beat the Youngstown State Penguins, 86-76 in a Horizon League matchup.

CSU closed the game on a 15-4 run.

Norris Cole scored 41 points, with 20 rebounds and nine assists led the way for the Vikings.

Cole, a native of Dayton, Ohio, became the first player to achieve a 40/20 game since Blake Griffin of Oklahoma had 40 points and 23 rebounds in a 95-74 win in 2009 over Texas Tech.

The Vikings are having a great season at 22-5, 11-4, while Youngstown State drops to 8-17, 2-13.

Wright State runs into buzz-saw at Cleveland State

The Wright State Raiders, on a 4-game road trip, that is now at 1-1 with a horrible loss at Cleveland State, 65-46.

The Raiders only managed 11 field goals and were led in scoring by Vaughn Duggins with 14 points.

WSU falls to 13-8 overall, 6-3 in the Horizon League.

Norris Cole scored 14 points, and host Cleveland State improved to 18-3 overall, 7-2 in the Horizon League.
