Braves’ Miller takes no-hitter into ninth inning; ends up with two-hitter in 6-0 win over Marlins

Shelby Miller becoming the ace of Atlanta’s pitching staff (

Shelby Miller is starting to pitch like a staff ace for the Atlanta Braves.

He and Julio Teheran are quite a 1-2 punch for the NL East team.

Sunday afternoon, the right-handed Miller make a bad team look worse by almost throwing a no-hitter.

The 24-year-old Miller took a no-hit bid into the ninth inning and retired two outs before the Marlins’ Justin Bour singled up the middle on the first-pitch. Then Dee Gordon reached on an infield hit.

Miller then induced Martin Prado into popping out to end up winning 6-0 over Miami at Marlins Park.

Miller retired 22 batters in a row from the second inning until Bour’s hit in the ninth.

His velocity was still solid in the ninth inning as his fastball was clocked at 95-mph.

After the game, Florida owner Jeffrey Loria fired manager Mike Redmond with the Marlins struggling with a 16-22 record.

With the 2015 baseball season moving along daily and certain teams getting off to slow starts, managers on the hot seat were a daily topic.

Ron Roenicke of the Milwaukee Brewers was rumored to be the first to get fired and he was.

The second name was Mike Redmond of the Miami Marlins due to the fact that management went out and made trades and spent money in the off-season to give the team a chance to challenge the Washington Nationals and Atlanta Braves in the NL East.

On Sunday, Redmond learned his fate after a disappointing 16-22 start to the 2015 season. The Marlins also let his bench coach, Rob Leary go after the team was swept by the Braves.

The Marlins entered the season with high hopes, but got off to a 3-11 start. Miami then rebounded and improved to 12-12 on May 2. But since then, the club has played inconsistent , going 4-10 after the latest sweep by Atlanta.

The club will announce Redmond’s replacement at an 11 a.m. ET news conference on Monday and rumors suggest that the new manager could be Dusty Baker, former manager Jack McKeon, current third base coach Brett Butler, special assistant to the GM Jeff Conine. Tony Perez and Andre Dawson also work in the Marlins’ front office.

The 44-year-old Redmond, who replaced Ozzie Guillen after the 2012 season, had his contract extended through 2017 before the final game of 2014 where the Marlins improved by 15 wins, and finished 77-85.

The former major league catcher inherited a young team that went 62-100 in his first season. Overall, he finishes with a record of 155-207.

President of baseball operations Michael Hill said, ”Really, we’re just looking for a new voice.”

B.J. Upton chooses Atlanta over Philadelphia

The Atlanta Braves have landed one of the top free agents of the 2012 off-season.

On Wednesday, they reached an agreement with former Tampa Bay Rays center fielder B.J. Upton to a fiver-year, $75.25 million contract.

Upton, who’s brother Justin plays for the Arizona Diamondbacks, was the second overall pick in the 2002 draft. He made his debut with the Rays at age 19 and spent six full seasons with the team.

B.J. and Justin are the only two brothers in MLB history to be selected in the number one and two slot of the draft (in separate years). The Upton brothers are also the first brothers to make it into the 20-20 club (both have hit 20 home runs and have 20 stolen bases in a season).

The 28-year-old Upton, replaces Michael Bourn, another free agent. He gives the Braves with top-line defense and a much-needed right-handed bat in a lefty dominated lineup.

He batted .246 with a career-low .298 on-base percentage in 2012, but clubbed 28 home runs with 78 RBI’s and 31 stolen bases in 37 attempts.

Upton chose the Braves over NL East rival Philadelphia, whose needed a CF to replace Shane Victorino to the Dodgers last season. Victorino is also a free-agent this off-season.

The Washington Nationals have named John McLaren as their interim manager, filling in a void created by the unexpected resignation Jim Riggleman.

The 59-year-old Nationals’ bench coach the past two years, takes the reins of the hottest team in Major League Baseball.

Riggleman quit on Thursday due to the fact club officials refused to discuss a contract extension.

McLaren is the Nationals’ fourth manager following Frank Robinson, Manny Acta and Riggleman, managed the Seattle Mariners for parts of two seasons where he compiled a combined 68-88 record.

He takes over a team that is just 8 1/2 games behind the Philadelphia Phillies in the NL East after winning 11 of its last 12 games.
