Nick Watney’s golf game has improved so much that he has moved into the top 10 in the world rankings and atop the PGA Tour money list for the first time in his career.

All of this because he topped off a fantastic weekend by winning the AT&T National at Aronimink Golf Club in Newtown Square, Pennsylvania.

Watney shot a 66, making three big par saves and three birdies on the front nine to take control and then held off K.J. Choi’s (67) for a two-shot win.

Watney finished at 13-under 267, tying the tournament record set by Tiger Woods in 2009 when it was played at Congressional Country Club in Bethesda, Maryland.

MEMORIAL TOURNAMENT 3rd round: Kuchar tied for third with Jobe

Matt Kuchar ( photo)

The ever-improving Matt Kuchar has himself ready to challenge for the 2011 Memorial Tournament title.

The first three rounds he has shot a 69,71, 68 for an 8-under-par 208, tied for third with Brandt Jobe.

He has played in six Memorial Tournaments and has a best-finish of a tie for fifth in 2009.

The 32-year-old Kuchar, who lives in Winter Park, Florida, is the World’s 7th ranking golfer.

Entering this week, Kuchar ranked second on Tour in scoring average (69.67) behind Luke Donald (69.16).

Kuchar (T3), Luke Donald (T17), Hunter Mahan (T8) and Nick Watney (WD) are tied for the TOUR lead with seven top-10 finishes in 2011.

Kuchar is currently ranked #1 in the President Cup standings for the United States team.

Players co-leaders are Watney, McDowell in rain-delayed tourney

Nick Watney (file photo)

The Players Championship in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, has been plagued by rain, but that did not stop Nick Watney and Graeme McDowell from taking over the lead during the third round.

This is golf’s richest prize.

Graeme McDowell (file photo)With the storms delaying the third round by 4 1/2 hours, Watney and McDowell came out firing in the twilight to reach 11 under par through only five holes when play was suspended by darkness.

Only 40 players were able to finish the third round.

Toms surges past Watney at Players Championship

David Toms (file photo)

David Toms has waited a very long time to win a golf tournament.

It has been five years since he has won a tourney and 10 years since he won his only major, the PGA Championship.

Toms went 25 holes before making a bogey in the second round and made enough good shots for a 4-under-par 68, giving him a one-shot lead over Nick Watney at the Players Championship at the TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida.

Eventhough he is leading, Toms doesn’t have a great record at TPC Sawgrass. In 18 previous attempts, he has missed the cut 10 times and only once has he finished in the top 10.
