Urban Meyer, the new Buckeyes head football coach

Eventhough its been the top story-line around Ohio for about a week, there’s really no surprise that Urban Meyer has accepted Ohio State’s offer to become the new football coach.

When Meyer said that he had not talked to Ohio State after all of the rumors were surfacing, everybody knew that was a lie. All coaches say that.

Reports have it that the 47-year-old Meyer, a native of Ashtabula, Ohio, will receive a 7-year, $40 million deal, which comes out to $5.7 million a year.

The former Florida Gators coach is one of three football coaches to win 100 games in his first 10 years: George Woodruff 124 wins at Penn State 1892-1901, Bob Stoops at Oklahoma 109 wins 1999-2008 and Meyer is third with 104 victories 2001-2010.

Also, Meyer along with Alabama head coach Nick Saban, are the only two coaches to win multiple BCS titles with 2.

Meyer, who is an offensive genius and can develop quarterbacks (Tim Tebow & Josh Harris), will be trying to improve Ohio State’s offensive unit which was fifth-worse in FBS at 124 yards per game.

The head football coach of the nation’s number one team, the Auburn Tigers, has received a new contract, which nearly doubles his salary and makes him one of the highest-paid football coaches in the country.

Auburn announced the deal recently that will pay Gene Chizik $3.5 million a year through 2015, with all types of incentives that could add on another $1 million.

Chizik was given the hefty reward for leading Auburn to their first national title since 1957 in his second season as coach. The Tigers went 14-0 last season, quite an improvement over the 8-5 in his first season. His salary was $2.1 million in salary and received $1.3 million in bonuses.

The raise for Chizik only puts him fourth amongst Southeastern Conference teams.

Alabama head coach Nick Saban’s contract is $4.7 million annually; LSU head coach Les Miles receives $3.75 million a year and Arkansas head coach Bobby Petrino receives $3.56 million yearly.

He was 1-11 in his first season at Miami in 2009 before improving to 9-4 this season and beat Northern Illinois in the Mid-American Conference championship game.

According to most media reports, Haywood was the only candidate for the job. Former Temple coach Al Golden was believed to be interested, but took the Miami Hurricanes job.

Haywood has been an assistant coach under some of college football’s best coaches: Mack Brown, Lou Holtz, Nick Saban and Charlie Weiss.

Quite fitting that Nick Saban receives the first Bobby Bowden award

compiled from staff and wire reports

Alabama head coach Nick Saban was presented Sunday night with the inaugural Bobby Bowden national collegiate coach of the year award.

Saban was presented the honor by the Over the Mountain Touchdown Club of  Birmingham, Alabama.

Also in attendance was Bobby Bowden, a Birmingham native who recently retired after the 2009 season, his 34th in college coaching at Florida State. Bowden won 389 games and two national championships at Florida State.

Nick Saban (UA)

Coach Saban led Alabama to a national championship, setting a school record with 14 victories in 2009. Also last season, running back Mark Ingram became the program’s first Heisman Trophy winner.

Saban is a native of West Virginia, and said the award was especially meaningful to him and his family because of a kind gesture made by Bobby Bowden when Nick Saban was a young assistant coach at Kent State University. Bowden, at the time was head football coach at West Virginia at the time and knew Saban’s father.

Says Saban, “After my father passed away, my mother was having several problems, and coach Bowden called and said he would create a graduate assistant position if I needed to come home. I have never forgotten that gesture and nor has my family.”
