Reds activate Bray from DL, sends Hoover to Triple-A Louisville

It has been two long months on the disabled list, but Cincinnati Reds left-handed reliever Bill Bray was finally activated before Friday’s series opener against the Minnesota Twins.

Bray was initially put on the DL due to a strained left groin, but back trouble caused him to stay awhile longer.

Bray returned following a six-game rehab assignment with Class A Dayton and Triple-A Louisville. In his four outings for Louisville, he gave up two runs and three hits with three walks and five strikeouts.

The bullpen had been performing so well without Bray, Nick Masset and Ryan Madson, that it was a tough call to send down anybody. To make room for Bray on the 25-man roster, the Reds optioned right-handed reliever J.J. Hoover to Triple-A Louisville. Hoover, a rookie,  performed well with a 3.00 ERA in 17 appearances with eight walks and 19 strikeouts over 18 innings.

The Reds will now how three lefty’s in the bullpen, Bray, Sean Marshall and Aroldis Chapman.

Bray, who is 29 years old, has a career mark of 13-12 with an ERA of 3.67 and 181 strikeouts. He has also played for the Washington Nationals. Bray has been with the Reds since 2006.

He still has to throw from the mound, pitch to live hitters and do his rehab assignment before the Reds can actually use him in a game.

He throws from 60 feet to 70 t0 150.

He report start throwing from the mound for another two weeks.

Bronson Arroyo pitched brilliantly as the Reds starter, allowing two runs in six innings. It was his longest pitching stint of the spring.

Nick Masset (courtesy of

The Cincinnati Reds and right-handed setup man Nick Masset have avoided arbitration and have agreed on a two-year contract.

The two sides exchanged figures, Masset was looking for $2.9 million and the Reds offered $2.1 million. Masset made $1.8 million in 2011.

Masset was 3-6 with a 3.71 ERA in 75 games last season. It was his third straight season of at least 74 appearances. But the year was one of up-and-down for the talented reliever as he allowed 31 walks, and five homers in 70.1 innings pitched. Plus, 11 of the 28 runners he inherited scored runs.
