Reds get bullpen ready for September run by adding LHP Zach Duke

The Cincinnati Reds are getting ready for the September stretch run by adding depth to the relief corps. The Reds have purchased the Triple-A contract of left-hander Zach Duke and sending right-handed rookie Nick Christiani back to Louisville, just ahead of Saturday’s Waiver Trade Deadline. To make room on the 40-man roster for Duke, the Reds designated right-handed pitcher Justin Freeman for assignment.

They have 10 days to trade, demote or release Freeman.

This move gives the Reds a more balanced bullpen. The Reds now have three  left-handers: Duke, Manny Parra and closer Aroldis Chapman.

The move also makes Duke eligible for the playoffs.

Duke, who is 30 years old, struggled with the Washington Nationals in the first few months of the season, posting an 8.71 ERA in 12 games and 20 2/3 innings before his June 10 release. He was a starter for the first six years of his big league career in Pittsburgh, then was used primarily in relief in Arizona in 2011 and with Washington in 2012, when he posted a 1.32 ERA in eight games before faltering this year.

Duke pitched very well with Triple-A Louisville,  going 2-0 with a 1.30 ERA in 26 games spanning 27 2/3 innings. He gave up only five walks while striking out 34.

He has a 50-75 won-loss record with an ERA of 4.64 and has struck out 558 batters.

Reds’ newest bullpen member is Nick Christiani; replaces Jonathan Broxton

Right-handed reliever Nick Christiani, who has pitched the last two seasons at Triple-A Louisville, was told late Thursday morning when Bats manager Jim Riggleman told him he was going to the major leagues to pitch for the Reds.

He was getting his first promotion after the Reds placed Jonathan Broxton on the disabled list with flexor mass strain in his right forearm.

Christiani was 6-5 with a 4.05 ERA, 15 walks and 48 strikeouts in 47 games this season for Louisville. Over his last 17 appearances, the 26-year-old had a 2.79 ERA. Of his 23 inherited runners, only three scored.

Christiani made his major league debut Friday night vs. the Milwaukee Brewers pitching 1 1/3 innings with 1 walk and 1 strikeout.
