Major League Baseball makes off-day changes in middle of LCS

There had been a lot of talk during the off-season that Major League Baseball would make changes in the off days in the postseason.

The awkward off-day between Games 4 and 5 of the league championship series, will be eliminated. Instead, there will be another off-day between the division series and the start of the LCS. That’s the word from the commissioner’s office on Wednesday.

The overall length of the postseason will not be shortened and the first round will remain a best-of-five at least through 2011.

Without any rainouts, this year’s switch will make it more difficult for any team to get through the best-of -seven LCS with only three starting pitchers, as the defending world champion New York Yankees did in 2009.

The off-day was among the four baseball added for the Fox network who wanted the World Series to open on a Wednesday rather than a Saturday, usually the lowest-rated night of the week.

This year’s division series starts October 6, and the National League team with the best record will likely be the one that decides whether it wants the eight-day division series. The American League Championship Series starts October 15, with the National League Championship Series beginning the following day. The World Series opens on Wednesday, October 27, and Game 7 would be scheduled for November 3, the second straight year it could extend past Halloween.

Reds' Infielder Aaron Miles (wfe)

compiled from staff and wire reports

The Cincinnati Reds figure to have a pretty good bench this year. Eventhough the roster hasn’t been finalized, it’ll probably be Aaron Miles, Chris Dickerson, Ryan Hanigan, Paul Janish, Miguel Cairo, Wladimir Balentien and Laynce Nix.

With the Reds’ trading away of centerfielder Willy Taveras and his $4 million dollar salary, it made it possible for them to add a solid utilityman in Aaron Miles. Miles will make $2.7 million but it is worth it because he can play all over the field except pitcher and catcher.

Rockies 1b Todd Helton (wfe)

Colorado Rockies first baseman Todd Helton, who ranks 44th all-time in doubles with 509, could pass several Hall of Fame members during the 2010 baseball season. Those will include Rickey Henderson(510), Joe Cronin (515), Willie Mays (523), Ted Williams (525), Frank Robinson (528), Lou Gehrig (534), Al Simmons (539), Joe Medwick  and Dave Winfield both at (540), Rogers Hornsby (541), Harry Heilmann (542) and Tony Gwynn (543).

Los Angeles Dodgers manager Joe Torre has changed his mind about 2010 being his last year as a mamager.  He says if his health is good and the Dodgers want him to stay, he would.

Dodgers Manager Joe Torre (LAD)

Torre enters the final season of a three-year, $13 million dollar contract signed on November 7, 2007. Dodgers hitting coach Don Mattingly, who came with Torre from the New York Yankees, is the manager in waiting.

Torre enters 2010 with 2,246 wins and 1,915 losses in 28 years as a manager.  His teams have reached the post sesason for 14 consecutive seasons and have won a division title in 11 of his last 12 seasons, including two consecutive NL West titles in his first two seasons with the Los Angeles Dodgers.
