SPORTS SPOTLIGHT FEATURE: Tony Tchani, Columbus Crew midfielder

The Columbus Crew on Friday acquired midfielder Tony Tchani from Toronto FC in exchange for defender Andy Iro and midfielder Leandre Griffit.  As a Generation adidas player, Tchani will not count against the Crew’s salary cap this season.

The 22-year-old Tchani, a native of Duola, Cameroon, Tchani was drafted by the New York Red Bulls in the first round (#2 overall) of the 2010 MLS SuperDraft. In his first professional season, he appeared in 27 matches, starting 17, scoring a goal and adding three assists.

Tchani made his MLS debut as a second half substitute in a 1-0 win over Chicago on March 20, 2010 and his first MLS start a 4-0 loss to San Jose on May 8 of the same season. He recorded his first career MLS goal against the Crew on May 20 and his first career assist on a Rafa Marquez goal at Toronto on August 21.

Tchani started the 2011 season in New York, then he was dealt to Toronto FC on April 1, as part of the Dwayne De Rosario trade.

Columbus Crew forward Bernardo Anor was voted MLS Player of the Week by the North American Soccer Reporters on Monday. The award caps a fantastic weekend in which he made his first MLS start and scored a goal and registered an assist.

Anor was a key player in the Crew’s 2-0 road win over the Houston Dynamo. His dynamic assist on Andres Mendoza’s first-half goal opened the scoring, then he buried an insurance goal late in the game that clinched Columbus’ first-ever win at Robertson Stadium.

Anor was selected in the third round (#48 overall) of the 2011 Major League Soccer SuperDraft and is a product of the University of South Florida. He has appeared in three MLS Reserve matches, scoring two goals and two assists, and had previously played 26 minutes as a substitute in the 0-0 draw against the New York Red Bulls on March 26.
