Linsanity is over for now as Lin tears meniscus

It was not long ago this current NBA season that the New York Knicks had tried out three point guards before settling on Jeremy Lin, who had been cut by Golden State and Houston.

He became an instant world-wide star in the NBA with back-to-back Sports Illustrated covers but now his season has ended.

The 23-year-old Lin will miss the rest of the regular season due to knee surgery that will keep him out of action six weeks. If the Knicks make it to the playoffs, he might be able to comeback in the Eastern Conference finals.

Lin had an MRI recently that showed a small, chronic meniscus tear.

Lin was having a great season for a player who had bounced around for the first few weeks at the start. He averaged 14.1 points, 6.1 assists.

Lin became the first American-born player of Taiwanese or Chinese descent to play in the NBA, and took the Knicks on a seven-game winning streak which was surprising with a team that has Carmelo Anthony and Amare Stoudamire as its star players.

Knicks win streak reaches 7; Lin dishes out 13 assists vs. Kings

The New York Knicks were supposed to be led by Amare Stoudemire and Carmelo Anthony.

But instead, they’re being led by the Lin factor and the results are very good.

Jeremy Lin did not have to score a lot of points on Wednesday night in the New York Knicks, 100-85 win over the Sacramento Kings.

The Harvard grad handed out a career-best 13 assists as the Knicks reached the .500 mark and won its seventh straight game.

Lin, a point guard, scored 10 points in a Knicks offense that shot 51 percent from the floor.

Lin scored 136 points in his first five starting assignments, most by any NBA player since the league merged with the ABA in 1976.

Lin is the reigning NBA Eastern Conference player of the week. He played 26 minutes in the game and sat out the end of the third quarter and all of the fourth quarter.

New York is 15-15 on the season.

This is the first time since the end of last season that the Knicks have won seven-in-a-row.

Celebrities at the game included former vice president Al Gore and former heavyweight boxer Mike Tyson.

The Jeremy Lin factor continues as the Knicks win sixth straight; beats Toronto

Jeremy Lin canned a three-point basket with less than a second to play, allowing the New York Knicks a 90-87 comeback win over the Toronto Raptors Tuesday night.

The win extends the Knicks winning streak to six games.

Lin made a pull-up jumper from the top of the key with half a second to play, giving New York their first lead since the first quarter.

Lin scored 27 points and a career-high 11 assists in his first game since being selected as the NBA’s Eastern Conference Player of the Week.

On a down note, Lin did commit 8 turnovers.

The 23-year-old Lin, a 6’3, 200-pound guard from Los Angeles, played at Harvard from 2006-2010.

Lin finished his career as the first player in the history of the Ivy League to record at least 1,450 points (1,483), 450 rebounds (487), 400 assists (406) and 200 steals (225). He graduated from Harvard in 2010 with a degree in economics and a grade-point average of 3.1.

He played in 2010-2011 with the Golden State Warriors.

Orlando’s Howard breaks Chamberlain’s 50-year-old FT record

Dwight Howard (file photo)

Wilt Chamberlain is best known for his 100-point game against the New York Knicks on March 2, 1962.

But he also had another record that was not as well known but was a 50-year-old regular-season record. The 7’1 giant set a record on February 22, 1962 with 34 free throw attempts as a member of the Philadelphia Warriors.

Last week, Orlando Magic star Dwight Howard shot 39 free throws in his team’s 117-109 win over the Golden State Warriors.

Prior to the game, Howard was the worst free-throw shooter in the NBA at 42.6%, so the Warriors thought they’d foul him in the post and make him score at the free-throw line.

The 26-year-old Howard took advantage of the situation, making 21 of 39 attempts and finished with 45 points and 23 rebounds.

It was the first time an NBA player scored at least 40 points and at least 23 rebounds since March 1, 2003 when the Lakers’ Shaquille O’Neal put in 48 points and yanked down 20 boards.

Colorado Buffaloes wide receiver Toney Clemons caught 4 passes for 31 yards in Saturday’s 37-17 loss to Ohio State on Saturday afternoon in Columbus, Ohio.

Clemons knows the Buckeyes quite well. He grew up in New Kensington, Pennsylvania, which is northeast of Pittsburgh and was invited to their Junior Day as a 2007 football recruit.

Clemons said that “Ohio State was a team I grew up wanting to play against when I was little. I was fortunate to get a chance to do it-twice.”

And Clemons took two losses. He played two seasons at Michigan (2007, 2008) before transferring to Colorado in 2009. In his freshman year in Ann Arbor, Ohio State visited and won 14-3. In 2008, Michigan played in Ohio Stadium and left with a 42-7 whipping. Clemons, played in 19 games with three starts while at Michigan, did not register a stat in either game against the Buckeyes.

With Saturday’s loss in Columbus, Clemons has faced Ohio State three times and is 0-for-3.
