Tampa Bay’s Lecavalier set to play in milestone 1,000th career game tonight

32-year-old Tampa Bay Lightning center Vincent Lecavalier will achieve another milestone in his NHL career tonight at the New York Islanders.

The Canadian will play in his 1,000th game of his career in his 14th season.

The first overall pick in the NHL Draft in 1998, came into the league as an 18-year-old and has stayed with the Lightning.

He said he never envisioned of playing in 1,000 games.

During his career, Lecavalier has played in 999 games, scored 373 goals, dished out 469 assists for 842 points.

New York Islanders head coach Capuano out of hospital

New York Islanders head coach Jack Capuano is out of the hospital after surgery to treat kidney stones.

It is unclear at this time when he’ll be able resume his duties behind the Isles bench.

Assistant coach Doug Weight was in charge on Saturday during a 2-1 loss to the New Jersey Devils.

The 46-year-old former defenseman played in the NHL with Boston, Vancouver and Toronto from 1988-1992.

Blue Jackets’ Johnson helps USA in rout of France


New Columbus Blue Jackets star Jack Johnson is making a name for himself on the world hockey stage as well.

Johnson, Bobby Ryan, Max Pacioretty, Jim Slater and Jeff Petry all scored a goal in USA’s 7-2 rout of France in the Group A game.

New York Islanders forward Kyle Okposo scored two goals for the U.S. team in the first game of the world hockey championship in Helsinki.

The USA plays Canada on Saturday (today).

The always-tough Canadians won their opener vs. Slovakia, 3-2.

Muller loses coaching debut at Carolina against Florida

45-year-old Kirk Muller is the new coach of the struggling Carolina Panthers, succeeding Paul Maurice.

Muller, a native of Kingston, Ontario, Canada, was a left winger during his 19-year career from 1984-2003.

Muller was a 1984 NHL Draft choice of the New Jersey Devils, second pick overall.

Muller also played for Montreal, the New York Islanders, Toronto, Florida and Dallas.

He had hoped to get his team off to a good start, but the Florida Panthers showed why their leading the NHL’s Southeast Division, with a 3-1 win in Muller’s coaching debut.

The Hurricanes have a disappointing record of 8-14-4 for 20 points.

Crosby returns in big fashion scoring two goals in Penguins 5-0 win

24-year-old hockey superstar Sidney Crosby came back from a 10-month rehab from concussion-like symptoms, singlehandedly beating the New York Islanders, 5-0.

The Pittsburgh Penguins star scored two goals, added a pair of assists on Monday night.

The former NHL MVP answered all the questions whether he could return to his superstar skills after missing so much time from the game.

His returned prompted 250 media requests which gave the game a playoff feel.
