Most fans of hockey probably don’t know if there is hockey being played in China.

There must be some potential hockey players coming out of that country because the New York Islanders just selected an up-and-coming star in the recent draft.

Andong Song, a 6’0” forward who was born in Beijing, became the first Chinese-born player selected in the NHL Draft when the Islanders picked him in the sixth round (172nd overall).

“I am the first,” he said. “Hopefully what I want to do is rally people behind me. Not focus on myself but do something good for Chinese hockey.”

The 18-year-old Song, who is Beijing, China, says he patterns his game after Nicklas Lidstrom, former star defenseman of the Detroit Red Wings.

The Islanders noticed Song playing at Lawrenceville School in New Jersey. In 26 games this past season, he scored 7 goals with 26 assists and 33 points.

Song says he wants to play for an NCAA hockey team. He is expected to enroll in a prep school during the 2015-16 season.

Crosby’s goal with 1:16 remaining in regulation was his 12th of the season.

The Penguins lead the NHL’s newly-formed Metropolitan Division with a 15-8-0 record.

Colorado Avalanche fire Sacco as coach after four seasons

Black Monday usually happens the day after the final NHL regular-season games.

It’s the day when owners and general managers fire their coaches after a disappointing season.

Joe Sacco was fired on Sunday after the Colorado Avalanche lost to the Minnesota Wild 3-1 in their final game.

The Avs missed the playoffs for the third straight season.

Colorado, usually a playoff contender, never was able to get going in the 48-game season and finished last in the Western Conference at 16-25-7 for 39 points.

Sacco, in four seasons, had a record of 130-134-30. He leaves with one year on his contract.

A former NHL Right winger, Sacco played from 1990-2003 with Toronto, Anaheim, New York Islanders, Washington and Philadelphia.

Detroit Red Wings chasing Blue Jackets for eighth spot in Western Conference; playoff run in jeopardy

Back in February when the Blue Jackets were 5-12-5, it looked like another season that was going to end in April.

The Detroit Red Wings at the time were in a playoff position (the top eight spots) and headed to the playoffs.

Well, this 48-game season has been one who has benefitted teams like the Blue Jackets and New York Islanders and has hurt Detroit and Nashville.

The Blue Jackets for the first time in their history won the season series from the Red Wings which is unbelievable.

As of today, April 22, The Blue Jackets have 51 points, tied for 7th place with Minnesota and the Red Wings are 9th with 48 points, tied with Dallas. The Blue Jackets have two games left while Detroit has four left.

The Red Wings lost in a shootout at Vancouver on Saturday and could not tie the Columbus.

Detroit has a streak of 21 straight seasons of making the NHL playoffs, which ties them for the fifth-longest such streak in league history.

The Red Wings try to play catch-up tonight as they host Phoenix.
