2010 NFL DRAFT: Browns pick CB Joe Haden of the Florida Gators

compiled from staff, wire and Browns info

Joe Haden Browns (u of florida)

Cornerback Joe Haden had very slow times in the 40-yard dash at the NFL scouting combine but the Cleveland Browns liked him so much that they knew he was good enough to be a number 1 pick.

Unable to move up in the first round after inquiring about the number 1 overall pick, Cleveland selected Haden, a two-time All-American at Florida, with the number 7 selection in Thursday’s first round.

Haden is the first player taken by Cleveland’s new management of general manager Tom Heckert and Browns president Mike Holmgren, who was brought in to restore and rebuild one of the NFL’s oldest franchises.

The 5’10 193-pound Haden was so elated when he received the phone call in New York from the Browns, he wept.

Bothered by a bad lower back that he aggravated while lifting weights, Haden was timed in Indianapolis as slow as 4.57 seconds- not exactly NFL cornerback material. But Cleveland liked him anyway. His times improved dramatically at the University of Florida Gators pro day.

Don Nelson is the NBA’S winningest coach

Don Nelson (nba)

Former Iowa Hawkeye Don Nelson has overtaken Lenny Wilkens as the NBA’s winningest coach. “Lenny has been an idol of mine for a long time,” Nelson said.

His Golden State Warriors beat the Minnesota Timberwolves on Wednesday night, 116-107 to give their coach win number 1,333 for his career.

Nelson’s career as a head coach started with Milwaukee in 1976 when he replaced Larry Costello 19 games into the season and he didn’t have an assistant coach to help him.

In 31 years as a coach, Nelson is 1,333-1,061 in his career where he has made stops in Milwaukee, New York, Dallas and Golden State twice. He won five titles as a player, has been coach of the year three times, but has never made the NBA Finals as a coach. He is the only coach with at least 1,000 career victories who hasn’t been inducted into the Hall of Fame.

Nelson, a Red Auerbach protege’, has a reputation as the “mad scientist” because of his experimentation with lineups and offensive plays to fit his teams that weren’t the most talented, lacked height and physical attributes that he needed. In his first stint with Golden State in the late ’80′s, he came up with the famous “Run T-M-C” lineup which consisted of guards Tim Hardaway, Mitch Richmond and Chris Mullin to make the Warriors one of the more entertaining and explosive teams in the league at that time.

Among active coaches, Jerry Sloan of Utah (1,188) and the Lakers’ Phil Jackson (1,095) are the closest to Nelson on the wins list. All three coaches played against each other in the “old school” NBA.
