Phil Dawson joins Browns 1,000-point club

The Cleveland Browns beat the New Orleans Saints, 30-17 this past Sunday. It was a big win for a young team, but it was also big as far as milestones go for one of it’s long-time veterans.

Placekicker Phil Dawson scored 12 of those 30 points and in the process has 1,006 in his career. He joins Lou “The Toe” Groza with 1,349 and Don Cockcroft with 1,080 as the only Cleveland Browns to surpass 1,000 career points.

That’s quite an achievement considering kickers are often replaced more than position players in the NFL.

Browns upset world champion Saints using gadget plays

The Cleveland Browns, according to media sources, spend a few minutes at practice each week working on gadget plays just in case they need to use them in a game.

In Sunday’s game against New Orleans, the Browns used, not one, but several trick plays.

They include, a 68-yard run by their punter Reggie Holmes, a 62-yard throwback by Joshua Cribbs to Eric Wright on a punt return, a 13-yard pass from running back Peyton Hillis to quarterback Colt McCoy, in upsetting and stunning the Super Bowl champion New Orleans Saints in the Superdome, 30-17.

This is the third straight season that Cleveland has upset a defending Super Bowl champion. In 2008, the New York Giants, 2009, the Pittsburgh Steelers and now the New Orleans Saints.

On defense, the Browns were using all types of fronts and alignments that basically made Saints quarterback Drew Brees look like a rookie. It was one of his worst games in the NFL, throwing four interceptions.

Colt McCoy and the Cleveland offense had an impressive fourth quarter drive that chewed up 7:34 on a 13-play, 50-yard drive.

The 2-5 Browns now go into the bye week having won two of its last three games.
