OHIO STATE AT MIAMI (FL) GAMEWEEK: Harris will start at QB for Hurricanes on Saturday

 

The Miami Hurricanes say that senior quarterback Jacory Harris will start when the team plays host to #15 Ohio State, this Saturday, September 17.

Harris has appeared in 36 games over his first three years, with 50 touchdowns and 39 interceptions. He was picked off four times in a loss to Ohio State last year in Ohio Stadium.

GAME NOTES:

* The game will be played at Sun Life Stadium. The home of the Miami Dolphins of the NFL, the Florida Marlins of MLB, the Orange Bowl has also been named Joe Robbie Stadium, Pro Player Stadium, Dolphins Stadium and Land Shark Stadium.

* Miami is 63-21 in home openers and 15-7 at Sun Life Stadium.

* Miami faces the Buckeyes in its 86th home opener.

* Both teams have new coaches for 2011. The Hurricanes have Al Golden, who spent the past 5 seasons at Temple University. Ohio State is led by Luke Fickell, who spent the past nine seasons as a defensive assistant coach with the Buckeyes.

* The Buckeyes lead the series 3-1 over Miami, including a 36-24 win in Columbus last season.

* Al Golden is looking for his first win as Hurricanes coach.

* Al Golden is 2-3 in home openers as a head coach.

* Al Golden is 27-35 as a head coach.

* The Hurricanes will remain home the next two weekends, taking on Kansas State on September 24 and Bethune-Cookman on October 1.

* The Buckeyes will play at home the next two weekends September 24 against Colorado and October 1 against the Michigan State Spartans.

* Former Hurricanes and current pro-Canes Jimmy Graham of New Orleans, Andre Johnson of Houston and Reggie Wayne of Indianapolis, all hauled in touchdowns passes in the opening week of the NFL season. At least one former ‘Canes player has scored a touchdown in every NFL week since Week 15 of the 2002 season, a remarkable span of 140 weeks in a row.

Bulger, former Rams QB retires

It has been reported all over the internet, radio and television today that former St. Louis Rams quarterback Marc Bulger has retired after 11 NFL seasons.

After leaving the Rams after the 2009 season, Bulger spent 2010 with the Baltimore Ravens but did not play.

Bulger played in two Pro Bowls and passed for 22,814 yards, 122 touchdowns and 93 interceptions.

 

He threw for more than 3,800 yards three times, including a career-best 4,301 in 2006, the only season he played all 16 games.

Bulger was drafted out of West Virginia University by New Orleans in 2000, but never played for the Saints. He did become a star until Mike Martz brought him to the Rams where he eventually replaced Kurt Warner as the starting quarterback.

College Football News

The College Football bowl schedule has been released for the 2011-12 season, showing 35 games over 23 days and ending with the BCS national championship game on January 9 in New Orleans.

The Football Bowl Association says the bowl season will open December 17 with three games on tap, the Humanitarian Bowl, the New Mexico Bowl and the New Orleans Bowl.

Their will be no games on New Year’s Day this year because that is a Sunday when the NFL will have a full slate of games to close the regular season.

The Rose Bowl will be January 2, the Sugar January 3, the Orange is January 4 and the Fiesta is January 5.

Bowl Championship Series announces dates; title game date to be flexible if needed

The Bowl Championship Series has chosen dates for its five bowl games in an effort to avoid conflicts that could come into play due to the National Football League lockout, with flexibility to move the title game if needed.

The BCS title game will be hosted by New Orleans and the Sugar Bowl on January 9, a Monday night. It could also be played on January 7 or January 10.

The Rose Bowl has been scheduled on January 2. The Sugar Bowl will be played on January 3, the Orange Bowl on January 4 and the Fiesta Bowl on January 5.

Former NBA star Traylor dead of apparent heart attack

 

Robert “Tractor” Traylor, who was a star player at the University of Michigan and played in the NBA, has died of an apparent heart attack at age 34.

Police in San Juan, Puerto Rico, said he was found on the bedroom floor of his oceanfront apartment. Police also stated that Traylor’s team, the Bayamon Cowboys, had not heard from him in days.

Traylor played for the Michigan Wolverines from 1995-1998.

He played in the NBA with Milwaukee, Cleveland for two stints, Charlotte and New Orleans.

The 6’8 290-pound power forward was a first-round draft pick of the Dallas Mavericks in 1998 and played seven seasons in the NBA, averaging 4.8 points and 3.7 rebounds.
