Former NBA guard Ray Williams dies at age 58

Former University of Minnesota and NBA guard Ray Williams died this past weekend. He was 58.

Williams died March 22, 2013  in New York City after suffering from colon cancer.

Ray is the younger brother of another former NBA star, Gus Williams who played for Golden State, Seattle, Washington and Atlanta.

Williams averaged 18.9 ppg in two seasons at Minnesota where his teammates included Kevin McHale and Mychal Thompson and head coach Flip Saunders. All four made their way into the NBA.

Williams played 10 years in the NBA with the New York Knicks twice, the New Jersey Nets twice, Kansas City Kings, Boston Celtics, Atlanta Hawks and San Antonio Spurs.

 

Vaughn introduced as new head coach of Orlando Magic

 

The Orlando Magic introduced first-time head coach Jacque Vaughn as the 10th in their history.

Vaughn knows that he might not have star center Dwight Howard to lead the players on the court.

The 37-year-old Vaughn is a former NBA player from 1997-2009 with Utah, Atlanta twice, Orlando, the New Jersey Nets and San Antonio.

He was a first-round pick out of Kansas in 1997 by the Jazz.

Vaughn won an NBA championship with the Spurs in 2007.

Barclays Center in Brooklyn looking to host many boxing events

Ebbets Field, home of the Brooklyn Dodgers prior to their move to the West Coast in 1957, hosted almost 80 boxing events before it was torn down.

Coming in 2012, the Brooklyn area will be the site of several more boxing events with the help of a new arena, The Barclays Center.

Golden Boy Promotions has agreed to bring at least 12 shows each year to the home of the NBA’s New Jersey Nets. Brooklyn Sports Entertainment is also on board with the events.

The Barclays Center, which holds 18,000, will open in 2012. The center’s design can fit boxing, with several configurations for 4,000. There are also luxury suites as well.

Atlantic 10 basketball tourney moving to Brooklyn

The Atlantic 10 Conference will be moving its tournament to Brooklyn, beginning in 2013.

The conference will host its championship in the new Barclays Center, which will also be the new home of the New Jersey Nets.

The past five years, the A-10 tournament has been held at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey. It’ll also be held one final time in 2012.

Krystkowiak leaves NBA to coach Utah Utes

The University of Utah hired 45-year-old Larry Krystkowiak as its new basketball coach.

The assistant coach of the NBA’s New Jersey Nets was chosen to lead the program into a new Conference, the Pacific-12.

The hiring comes three weeks after Jim Boylen was fired following consecutive losing seasons.

Krystkowiak was an assistant with the Nets for just eight months. The Utah job will be his fourth head-coaching job.

Krystkowiak was fired in 2008 in a season and a half with the Milwaukee Bucks. He has also coached at the University of Montana and for the Idaho Stampede of the NBA Development League.
