New Jersey Devils getting ready to celebrate 20th anniversary of 1995 Stanley Cup Champion team

The NHL’s New Jersey Devils will be celebrating the 20th anniversary of their 1995 Stanley Cup Championship on Saturday, March 7 and Sunday, March 8, 2015.

More than 20 players and coaches will reunite during those days for festivities at the Prudential Center.

The weekend gets underway on Saturday with an alumni charity game featuring the players of the 1995 Stanley Cup winning title team.

Memebers of the franchise’s first Stanley Cup team will then be honored on Sunday in a special ceremony prior to the Devils game against Metropolitan Division rival Philadelphia Flyers at 5:00 PM.

The coach of the 1995 team was Jacques Lemaire. Some of his top players included: Bill Guerin, Bobby Holik, Claude Lemieux, Martin Brodeur and Scott Niedermayer.

Av’s goalie Varlamov remains tough in regulation games

Semyon Varlamov, the 25-year-old goaltender of the Colorado Avalanche, recorded 33 saves and stopped both shootout attempts he faced in a 2-1 win Thursday night over the New Jersey Devils.

The Russian goalie has helped lead the Avalanche to their 30th win of the season, which matches the 2000-2001 team as the fastest club in franchise history to reach 30 victories in 47 games.

Varlamov, who started his NHL career with the Washington Capitals organization in 2006, has not lost a game in regulation since December 10, posting a 10-0-5 record since that 2013 date.

New York Islanders head coach Capuano out of hospital

New York Islanders head coach Jack Capuano is out of the hospital after surgery to treat kidney stones.

It is unclear at this time when he’ll be able resume his duties behind the Isles bench.

Assistant coach Doug Weight was in charge on Saturday during a 2-1 loss to the New Jersey Devils.

The 46-year-old former defenseman played in the NHL with Boston, Vancouver and Toronto from 1988-1992.

Niedermayer honored by New Jersey Devils

38-year-old defenseman Scott Niedermayer was recently honored by one of his former teams, the New Jersey Nets.

His #27 jersey was retired before the team’s game against the Dallas Stars.

Niedermayer, who played in the NHL from 1991-2010, helped lead the Devils win three Stanley Cups in 13 years.

He joins two other defenseman, Ken Daneyko (#3) and Scott Stevens (#4), as the only players in the team’s 30-year history to have their numbers retired.

Niedermayer also played for the Anaheim Ducks.

Muller loses coaching debut at Carolina against Florida

45-year-old Kirk Muller is the new coach of the struggling Carolina Panthers, succeeding Paul Maurice.

Muller, a native of Kingston, Ontario, Canada, was a left winger during his 19-year career from 1984-2003.

Muller was a 1984 NHL Draft choice of the New Jersey Devils, second pick overall.

Muller also played for Montreal, the New York Islanders, Toronto, Florida and Dallas.

He had hoped to get his team off to a good start, but the Florida Panthers showed why their leading the NHL’s Southeast Division, with a 3-1 win in Muller’s coaching debut.

The Hurricanes have a disappointing record of 8-14-4 for 20 points.
