The Columbus Crew were trailing for over 70 minutes against Real Salt Lake, one of the MLS’ top defensive teams.

Then, in the span of six minutes, “America’s Hardest Working Team” scored two goals which changed the momentum of the game.

Josh Gardner’s first goal in a Crew uniform lifted Columbus to a thrilling come-from-behind 2-1 victory over Real Salt Lake Wednesday night at Crew Stadium. The Crew remained unbeaten at home (4-0-3) and improved to 4-3-6 on the season.

Gardner gave Columbus the lead in the 82nd minute when his shot from 22 yards out hit the left thigh of Real Salt Lake defender Chris Schuler and skipped past goalkeeper Nick Rimando.

The Crew had been trailing when they finally received a break in the 76th minute when Justin Meram was tripped in the box by Jamison Olave and Andres Mendoza converted the penalty kick to tie the game at 1-1.

RSL (6-3-2) had led 1-0 since the 7th minute when Olave scored off a Nelson Gonzalez corner kick.

Crappy Game but Crew prevails over Real Salt Lake, 1-0

Columbus, Ohio – A goal by Mr. Reliable, Guillermo Barros Schelotto on a penalty kick in the 38th minute was just enough to propel the 2008 MLS Champion Columbus Crew over the 2009 MLS champion Real Salt Lake, 1-0 over the weekend in Crew Stadium. The game between the past two MLS Champions was played to the best, very physical, good defense and low scoring before 14,322 in a rain-soaked Stadium. As Crew coach Robert Warzycha said “he rather win this crappy game, than play a good game and lose like what happens to the Crew in most cases”.

Crew goalkeeper William Hesmer preserved the lead in the 82nd minute with a diving stop after Nelson Gonzalez drove a free kick from 22 yards that was headed towards the left side netting.

Will Johson appeared to have scored on the ensuing scramble, but he was ruled offside on the play, nullifying the goal.

Hesmer made another key save in the 88th minute when he made a brilliant kick save after Robbie Findley broke free on a breakaway chance.

Schelotto’s decisive goal came after the Crew’s Robbie Rogers was taken down in the box by RSL’s Robbie Russell. The Argentine veteran powered the ensuing shot to the upper left hand corner past goalkeeper Nick Rimando for the only tally of the match.

The Crew remained unbeaten at 2-0-1 this season and avenged last year’s postseason loss to RSL last year, when the visitors won 3-2 in the second leg of the Eastern Conference semifinal series, stunning a Columbus team which had won the Supporters Shield for the second consecutive season. With the loss, Real Salt Lake is 1-3-1.
