Beals selects Josh Newman as Volunteer assistant coach

New Ohio State baseball coach Greg Beals on Tuesday, selected former Major Leaguer and Ohio State pitching standout Josh Newman as the team’s volunteer assistant coach.

“It is an honor and a privilege to be back,” said Newman, a four-year Ohio State letterman from 2001-2004.

A native of Wheelersburg, Ohio and 2004 Ohio State graduate with a degree in history, Newman ranks third all-time at Ohio State in career wins (32), innings pitched (369.0) and strikeouts (291). He was a freshman All-American in 2001 and a three-time all-Big Ten honoree, including a first-team selections in 2004. He posted eight wins in each of his four seasons as a Buckeye starter and in the process posted a 17-8 record vs. Big Ten Conference teams. He had 17 complete games in his career.

A three-time Academic all-Big Ten honoree, Newman helped the Buckeyes to a 161-84-1 record, a Big ten regular season championship (2001) and two Big Ten tournament championships (2002 and 2003) in his career. Ohio State went to three NCAA Regional tournaments and hosted an NCAA Super Regional (2003) in his four years in Columbus.

Newman has pitched and performed well in as big a game as any Buckeye in the last 40-plus years, picking up a Game 1 win in the Auburn Regional in 2003 over host Auburn University and also starting Game 1 of the Columbus Super Regional one week later against Missouri State.

Newman was drafted in the 19th round of the 2004 MLB First Year Player Draft and signed a professional contract with the Colorado Rockies. He had previously been drafted by the Cincinnati Reds in 2003 but decided to stay at  Ohio State for his senior season.

Newman spent three seasons in the minors before making his Major League debut against Philadelphia on September 12, 2007, making the Colorado Rockies World Series roster that season. He also played for Colorado Springs and the Kansas City Royals before retiring in September 2008.

He lives in Dublin, Ohio with his wife, Sarah, and daughter, Ayda.

COLLEGE WORLD SERIES: Game 2, South Carolina 2 UCLA 1 in 11; Gamecocks win first baseball title

compiled from NCAA, South Carolina and UCLA news

The South Carolina Gamecocks will go down in the history books for closing out 61-year-old Rosenblatt Stadium in Omaha, Nebraska winning its first baseball title with a brand of come-from-behind baseabll.

The Columbia, South Carolina school provided the stadium with the perfect send-off. The stadium has been home to college baseball’s biggest stage since 1950. The 2-1 2 in 11 innings over UCLA on Tuesday night was a classic for the ages.

In 2011, the College World Series will move to a new stadium in downtown Omaha next year.

The Gamecocks, 54-16 trailed in the middle innings of all three of its NCAA regional games and had to win two one-run games in the super regionals to make it to the College World Series.

Once they arrived in Omaha, the Gamecocks lost their first game and had to hold-off elimination four times to reach the finals, even winning one game after being down to their very last strike.

In the end to a fantastic season, South Carolina came from behind again Tuesday night, tying the game in the eighth inning and beating UCLA (51-17) in the 11th on Whit Merrifield’s RBI single.

The Gamecocks won six straight games after losing their CWS opener against Oklahoma, and became the third first-time champion since 2006 after sweeping the best-of-three series.

This was the fifth championship decided in an extra-inning final, and first since Southern California topped Florida State by a 2-1 score in 15 innings in 1970.

Jackie Bradley, Jr., was named the CWS Most Outstanding Player.

Matt Price, 5-1 was the winner allowing one hit over 2-2-3 innings for South Carolina, who also went to the College World Series in 1975, 1977 and 2002, but ended up with no title.

Dan Klein, 6-1 took the loss for UCLA after working 3-1-3 innings.

Garrett Wittels hitting streak at 56 games; it’ll continue in 2011

compiled from staff, wire and Florida International news

Robin Ventura’s 58 game hitting streak is safe until the 2011 season. But Garrett Wittels now knows how Joltin’ Joe DiMaggio felt like when he reached 56 games in a row.

Wittels extended his hitting streak to 56 games on Saturday, the same number of  Joe DiMaggio’s major league record hit streak in 1941, but Wittels’ Golden Panthers baseball team were eliminated from the Coral Gables, Florida NCAA regional with a 15-9 loss to Dartmouth College.

Garrett Wittels (FIU)

Wittels hit an RBI double in the first inning, leaving him two games shy of the NCAA Division I record set by Oklahoma State’s Robin Ventura in 1987. Wittels attempt to break that mark will resume during the 2011 season which will began in February.

Garrett Wittels went 3 for 5 in the game and finished the season with a .417 average and a FIU season-record 100 hits. He broke the previous school record of 98 set by Kenny Aderley in 1986.

Wittels began his streak with a bunt single in the Golden Panthers’ season opening game against Maryland way back on February 19.

FIU, ending the season at 36-25, failed to provide Wittels another game to extend the hitting streak this season after blowing an early four-run lead.
