The National Hockey League will kick off its regular season with a national television doubleheader featuring the Stanley Cup champion Boston Bruins.

The Bruins will host the rival Philadelphia Flyers in the first of two games on the NBC Sports Network, formerly Versus on October 6, and the Pittsburgh Penguins will visit Western Conference champion Vancouver Canucks in the nightcap.

NBC’s first game will be November 25, the day after Thanksgiving, when Boston plays host to the Detroit Red Wings.

The network will air the Winter Classic on January 2 as the New York Rangers play at Philadelphia.

NBC Sports Group and the NHL are getting ready to enter the first year of a 10-season deal reportedly worth $2 billion.

The Bruins’ Stanley Cup-clinching win against the Canucks in June earned a 4.8 rating, the NHL’s highest-rated game in 37 years.

The two games that won’t be aired on Fox, will instead be aired by the NBC Sports Network, formerly Verses; they include the March 29 game against Detroit and April 5 Colorado.

The only game that won’t be televised by any network, will be the October 12 game against Colorado.

The Fox Sports Net broadcast crew will have one addition, Dave Maetzold, the former sports anchor at WCMH-TV 4 will team with Ray Crawford during the pregame show for away games.

Blue Jackets will get national TV exposure twice in 2011-12

(file photo)

The Columbus Blue Jackets have earned some repect this off-season with all of the bold changes they’ve made. But they still have to earn the respect of the television networks to get more games on national television.

The NHL Network has passed them up for this coming season.

The National Hockey League has released its 2011-12 television schedule and the Blue Jackets will get two late-season TV dates on Versus, the NBC Sports Network on March 28 against Detroit and April 5 at Colorado.

There is flex scheduling and there is a chance if the team is winning as the season goes along, they might receive a few more dates. But sometimes, the team’s losing ways in the past and small TV market has worked against it. However, as the saying goes, “winning cures all.”

The Blue Jackets are not the only team that won’t be shown on the NHL Network this year; Phoenix, Florida, and Edmonton are the others.
