University of Maryland Terrapins men’s basketball coach Gary Williams surprised the college basketball world by announcing his retirement on Thursday.

He led Maryland, his alma mater, to the 2002 national championship.

Williams coached for 33 years, the last 22 at Maryland, where he starred as a guard from 1964 to 1967.

His career record ends at 668-380, including 461-252 with the Terrapins. Under his guidance, Maryland went to the NCAA Tournament 14 times, won or shared three Atlantic Coast Conference titles and reached the Final Four twice.

He coached at Ohio State from 1986 to 1989, earning a 59-41 record with one NCAA Tournament appearance and two National Invitation Tournament bids. He was very popular with Buckeyes’ fans and still is after all of these years.

The hot-tempered, always serious Williams, began his college coaching career at American University in 1978. He then moved over to Boston College in 1982, then to Ohio State before settling in at Maryland.

The Terrapins this past season went 19-14 and did not play in either the NCAA or NIT.

The defending National Invitation Tournament Champion Dayton Flyers will be able to defend their title as one of 32 teams selected to the 2011 NIT.

UD earned the #3 seed and will begin on the road to take on #6 seed College of Charleston tonight (Tuesday, March 15) beginning at 7 p.m. ET.

The game will be televised nationally on ESPN2.

Dayton enters the 2011 NIT as the #3 seed in its region, but goes on the road to Charleston, South Carolina due to UD Arena hosting the NCAA First Four. During last year’s NIT Championship run, the Flyers won at Cincinnati, at Illinois and in Madison Square garden against Ole Miss and North Carolina.

The College of Charleston, 24-10 overall, won the Southern Conference regular season championship. The Cougars led by 2011 SoCon Player of the Year, Andrew Goudelock.

The Southern Conference is Appalachian State, UT-Chattanooga, The Citadel, Davidson, Elon, Furman, Georgia Southern, Samford, North Carolina-Greensboro, Western Carolina and Wofford.

UD is attempting to be the third team to win the NIT Championship in back-to-back seasons.

The Flyers’ NIT history is rich with success. Last season was Dayton’s third NIT title. UD previously won the NIT in 1962 and 1968. Last year was also UD’s 22nd appearance in the postseason NIT.

The Dayton, Ohio school has been the runner-up five times and showcases a 40-20 all-time record. Head Coach Brian Gregory is 7-1 all-time in the NIT. Dayton’s 22 NIT appearances are second only to St. John’s 27 berths.

The Flyers reached the finals five times in the 1950′s and won the tournament in 1962 under coach Tom Blackburn and 1968 under coach Don Donoher.

The ninth-seeded Dayton Flyers run in the Atlantic 10 Conference Tournament was not expected. But the team showed they belong in the post season.

The Flyers fell short in the championship game to the third-seeded Richmond Spiders, 67-54 in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

Columbus, Ohio native Chris Johnson had 11 points and six rebounds for Dayton.

The Flyers tournament run with wins over Massachusetts, #18 Xavier and St. Joseph’s allowed them to be selected to return to the National Invitation Tournament.

Chris Wright and Johnson were named to the 2011 A-10 All-Tournament team.

Dayton is now 1-2 in A-10 Championship games and struggled from the outside hitting 3-of-14 shots from beyond the 3-point arc. The Flyers shot 38 percent from the field against the top defense in the conference.

The Flyers fall to 22-13.
