What rivalry? Nashville still has Blue Jackets number

compiled from staff and wire reports

Everytime the Columbus Blue Jackets get ready to go to Nashville, one wonders if they feel it’ll be a wasted trip. The central Tennessee city, known as “Smashville” hasn’t been too kind to the Jackets since they entered the league.

The Predators have beaten the Blue Jackets 14 consecutive times in Nashville. It is the National Hockey League’s longest home winning streak over another team.

All three of Nashville’s home wins over Columbus this year have been in overtime, as was the case last night.

The stars of the game for Nashville Saturday night were, defenseman Cody Franson and goalie Pekka Rinne.

Franson scored 1:54 into overtime and Rinne posted his second straight shutout as the Predators beat the Blue Jackets, 1-0, in Nashville.C

Three of Pekka Rinne’s last four wins have been by shutout. He has gone 132 minutes, 36 seconds without allowing a goal.

The fact that Columbus played a close game is remarkable considering top players have been traded away, several injuries and a depleted defenseman corps.

GAME NOTES

Ohio Valley Conference (ovc)

The Ohio Valley Conference will be changing the format of its tournament next season. All eight teams that qualify for the tournament will compete in Nashville. First-round games currently are played on campus sites with the semifinals and finals moving to Nashville.

The Ohio Valley Conference includes: Tennessee-Martin, Murray State, Austin Peay, Morehead State, Eastern Kentucky, Tennessee State, Eastern Illinois, Tennessee Tech, Jacksonville State and Southeast Missouri State.

Nebraska Cornhuskers (un)

Despite fan, alumni and media outcry, Nebraska seems to be sticking with men’s basketball coach Doc Sadler, eventhough the team is in last place of the Big 12 Conference. This is Sadler’s fourth season as coach.

Associate Athletic Director Marc Boehm, who is in charge of men’s and women’s basketball, says that Sadler’s job is safe for now.

The Huskers (14-17, 2-14 Big 12) are having their worst conference season since 1962-63. Last season, Nebraska won 18 games and finished eighth in the Big 12 with an 8-8 record.

Sadler’s contract pays him a base salary of $800,000 a year and runs through the 2013-2014 season.
