Willy T. Ribbs, the first African-American to drive in the Indianapolis 500, has announced that he will be coming out of retirement to race in the Firestone Indy Lights Series first street course event in Baltimore on September 3.

The 56-year-old Ribbs, says he never officially retired, just took time away from racing, has begun preparation at a karting track in Greencastle, Indiana.

He will be funded by American Honda and Starting Grid Inc, which aims to help minority endeavors.

Ribbs, raced in the Indy 500 in 1991 and 1993. His last action in a car was 10 years ago and he is racing now to get some attention to his Izod IndyCar Series team that made its debut in May with driver Chase Austin, who is focusing on driving oval course races.

Ribbs has raced in the IRL, NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series, NASCAR Winston Cup, Trans-Am Series and the North American Formula Atlantic Series.
