* On January 16, 1991, the White House announced the start of Operation Desert Storm to drive Iraqi forces out of Kuwait. In an address to the nation, President George H.W. Bush declared, “The battle has been joined.”

* In 1944, General Dwight D. Eisenhower took command of the Allied Expeditionary Forces in London.

* In 1969, two manned Soviet Soyuz spaceships became the first vehicles to dock in space and transfer personnel.

* In 1978, NASA named 35 candidates to fly on the space shuttle, including Sally K. Ride, who became America’s first woman in space; and Guion S. Bluford Jr. who became America’s first black astronaut in space.

**Born on this date in 1930 in Wapakoneta, Ohio, which is located in Auglaize County, American astronaut and the First man on the moon, Neil Armstrong.

A United States Navy fighter pilot during the Korean War, Armstrong became a test pilot for what was then the National Advisory Committee on Aeronautics in 1955.

In 1962, Armstrong was already a veteran of the X-15, he became a National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) astronaut and served as command pilot of the Gemini 8 mission.

As a commander of Apollo 11 (June 16-24, 1969, he was the first person to step on the moon.

Armstong taught aeronautical engineering at the University of Cincinnati from 1971 to 1979.

In 1985, President Reagan appointed Armstrong to the National Commission on Space and in 1986 named him vice chairman of a panel to investigate the explosion of the space shuttle Challenger, which happened earlier that year.

* In 1914, transcontinental telephone service began with the first test phone conversation between New York and San Francisco.

* In 1957, the International Atomic Energy Agency was established.

* In 1958, President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed the National Aeronautics and Space Admininstration Act, creating NASA.

* One year ago, July 29, 2009, Microsoft and Yahoo announced a 10-year Internet search partnership, taking on Google who has dominated the online advertising market.

* Former President Bill Clinton and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton will be spending between $3 million to $5 million for daughter Chelsea’s wedding on Saturday, July 31. The experts say that’s about $6,000 a head for an estimated 500 guests which will take place in Rhinebeck, New York.

* Victoria Secret’s model Miranda Kerr, CSI, Miami star Emily Proctor and Dancing With the Stars and Bachelor contestant Melissa Rycroft are each expecting a child.
