Dayton Flyers bad luck on Xavier’s home court continues

Usually when the Dayton Flyers schedule calls them to go to Xavier, which is located just 50 miles south on I-75 from their campus, most fans feel it is a loss before the game begins.

The Flyers haven’t won on Xavier’s home court whether it’s the Cincinnati Gardens or the Cintas Center, since January 10, 1981, going 0-26 over the past 30 years. But by the same token, Xavier’s record at UD Arena is just as bad.

Saturday, Tu Holloway scored 24 points, including a key bank shot with 31 seconds left as the Musketeers upped their record to 11-5 overall, 3-0 in the Atlantic 10 Conference.

Juwan Staten led the Flyers with 17 points. UD is now 15-5, 2-2 in the Atlantic 10.

Number 9 Xavier slips past Dayton

The Xavier women’s basketball team beat their arch-rival, the Dayton Flyers, 63-59.

Amber Harris scored 23 points in leading the Musketeers to improve their record to 12-2, 1-0 in the Atlantic 10.

The Flyers had trouble all game handling Harris, who connected on three straight baseline shots in the closing seconds of the game.

Dayton falls to 9-6, 0-1 in the Atlantic 10 Conference.

Bearcats win braggings rights for Cincinnati by routing Xavier by 20

Yancy Gates (file photo)

Yancy Gates scored a season-high 22 points as 24th-ranked Cincinnati won for the 15th time without a loss to start the season by blowing out Xavier 66-46 in the crosstown shootout. The win allows the Bearcats to take back the city’s bragging rights for the first time in four years.

The Bearcats matched the 1998-99 team for the second-best best start in school history and it came against their crosstown rival Musketeers, who had won three in a row and eight of 11 in the series.

No one could stop the athletic and physical Gates, a 6-foot-9, 265-pound power forward, who was tough on the outside shooting his jump shot. Gates went 10 of 16 from the field and had 14 rebounds.

The Musketeers were led by Jamel McLean with 18 points. Their leading scoring Tu Holloway who averages 21.3 points per contest, was held to only 5 points on 2-of-13 shooting.

There is an interesting human interest twist to this game involving Mark Lyons, Tu Holloway and Albany University.

Weather-related flight cancellations forced the Great Danes to travel by bus to Cincinnati, Ohio. Showing the holiday spirit, Albany offered Lyons, from nearby Schenectady, New York and Tu Holloway, from Hempstead, New York, a ride on the bus. Lyons was able to ride with the Great Danes but Holloway couldn’t get to Albany to be able to take them up on the offer.

Holloway, did arrive at the Cintas Center, home of the Musketeers, just in time for the 2 p.m.

All five Musketeers starters scored in double figures led by Kenny Frease for 17 points, 9 rebounds, Jamel McLean had a double-double had 15 points and 11 rebounds and Dante Jackson put in 14 points.

Canty is expected to miss at least four weeks with a stress fracture which was discovered a couple of days ago.

Canty, a 6-foot-6 freshman who plays forward and guard, averages 9.5 minutes per game.
