Renovations at Muirfield for Memorial Tournament and continues for 2013 President’s Cup

Fans of the Memorial Tournament have noticed quite a few changes this year at Muirfield Village Golf Club.

In years past, the shuttle vans and buses would drop people off on at the Kinross entrance to the course. But this year, Tournament Director Dan Sullivan and the rest of the powers that be, decided a new entrance was needed.

There has been a bus depot created into a turnaround on Memorial Drive by the driving range and another one at the main entrance.

The driving range gives the spectators more of a view and how much goes into the players practice before the actual rounds of golf. The improvement allows the golfers to actually simulate what goes on the course with driving greens as well.

Jack Nicklaus, founder and course architect at Muirfield has been giving the course improvements, little-by-little in preparation for the 2013 President’s Cup.

The driving range went from 286 yards and now measures 330 feet. He added mounding and trees, greens and replica fairways as well.

One last change noticed by fans this week is the hospitality area. All tents have been moved to the middle of the course right off the 10th fairway.

Nicklaus always says he is never satisfied and is always looking for ways to improve the course and tournament.

Woods has a presence at Muirfield; shoots 2-under-70 despite battling allergies

Tiger Woods has not played much golf in 2012.

The former number-1 golfer in the world has missed tournament cuts once and tied for 40th twice since he won the Arnold Palmer Invitational. That was his worst three-tournament stretch as a pro golfer.

Woods took the past two weeks to work on his game.

Woods, a four-time winner at the Memorial Tournament, battled allergies in Thursday’s opening round, more than the golf course which was tough enough. Flying seeds from the cottonwood trees on the Muirfield Village Golf Club floated everywhere causing Woods some trouble, but he still managed a 2-under-par-70 to become a factor on the leaderboard.

Woods did a good job of taking care of the par-5′s, with three birdies and was able to save par four times with putts from more than 5 feet away.

Golf fans in Ohio may not know, but the Presidents Cup will be coming to Muirfield Village Golf Club in 2013.

The Presidents Cup is a biennial match-play competition between 12-man teams representing the U.S. and the rest of the world minus Europe.

It’ll be played on the course Jack Nicklaus built, October 3-6, 2013.

The Memorial Tournament has announced a program which will give patrons who purchase tickets to the 2012 Memorial at Muirfield Village a discount on tickets to the 2013 Presidents Cup. The discount looks this way, $165 for the week compared to $207. Memorial badges will stay at $155 in 2012.

For those fans who do not purchase Memorial tickets will be able to buy Presidents Cup tickets for the full price, after the June 2012 Memorial Tournament.

Muirfield Village will be making history when it hosts the Presidents Cup. It’ll be the only golf course in the world to have hosted the Presidents Cup, Ryder Cup and Solheim Cup. The Solheim is team competition between women golfers from the U.S. and Europe.

2011 Memorial Tournament: Playoff holes rarely needed

Playoff holes are common-place on the PGA Tour but rarely at the Memorial Tournament at Muirfield Village Golf Club in Dublin, Ohio.

David Edwards’ win over Rick Fehr in 1992 was the last playoff in the Memorial. The 18-year absence is the longest streak of any event on the Tour.

The longest playoff drought had been at The Players Championship, which concluded when Sergio Garcia defeated Paul Gaydos in 2008. That ended a 20-tournament streak that dated back to 1987.

Four of the first 17 Memorial Tournaments came down to a playoff, including hometown hero, host and founder Jack Nicklaus beating Andy Bean in 1984 for his second win.
