Ravens, Orioles can’t work out conflict; Super Bowl champions begin season on road

The NFL has no choice but to have a rarity occur with its Super Bowl champion.

The Baltimore Ravens, who defeated the San Francisco 49ers in the Super Bowl back in February, will be celebrating their title with a road game to start the 2013 season.

The NFL had sought the help of the Baltimore Orioles and Major League Baseball to move a game from the evening to the daytime, but to no avail.

The Ravens play at M&T Bank Stadium and the Orioles play at Oriole Park at Camden Yards. The two stadiums sit next door to each other and they share the same parking lots, so the teams try to avoid playing at the same time due to traffic problems.

The NFL traditionally has its reigning champion open at home and had the Ravens playing at home on Thursday, September 5. But the Orioles already had scheduled to play the Chicago White Sox that evening.

The NFL is looking to set up a celebration in Baltimore to honor the Ravens with a pre-game concert even with the team playing on the road.

Commissioner Goodell says NFL playoffs won’t expand in 2013

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said on Monday that the league will not be adding any teams to the playoffs for the 2013 season.

There had been talk and speculation that the NFL would expand past the current 12-team format.

The other topic at the owners meetings in Phoenix yesterday was that there is a scheduling conflict with the Baltimore Ravens opening at home due to the Baltimore Orioles game on the same date.

The Ravens play at M&T Bank Stadium and the Orioles at Camden Yards, just across the streek and the two stadiums share the same parking lots.

Traditionally, the NFL season opens with the Super Bowl winners playing host on the Thursday night after Labor Day.

The Ravens will not have that opportunity unless the Orioles move their night game on September 5 to the afternoon.

The NFL will not have the option of using September 4 because it is the first night of the Jewish holiday, Rosh Hashanah.

Goodell says he has twice talked to MLB commissioner Bud Selig to help get a resolution with the Orioles, but has not heard anything back.

The NFL has moved opening nights before. Last year, the opener was moved to Wednesday avoiding a conflict with President Barack Obama’s acceptance speech at the Democratic National Convention.
