Bengals shock Browns in season opener, 27-17

Rookie wide receiver A.J. Green caught Cleveland’s secondary napping to score his first career catch, a 41-yard touchdown from backup quarterback Bruce Gradkowski as the Cincinnati Bengals spoiled a sloppy debut by Cleveland under new head coach Pat Shurmur.

The Bengals won 27-17.

Gradkowski, who played for the Browns in 2008, came on in relief of injured rookie quarterback Andy Dalton, called for a quick snap as the Browns were still trying to figure out the Bengals offensive alignment, lobbed the ball to Green, who scored with 4:31 to go in the game and shocked the Browns and all the fans in Cleveland Stadium.

The Browns fell to 1-12 in season openers since their return to the NFL in 1999.

Another bright spot was Bengals running back Cedric Benson, who rushed for 121 yards and cemented the game with a 39-yard run down the right sideline for a TD with 1:49 to play.

Dalton, the Bengals rookie QB, looked good in the team’s first three drives. The second-round pick from TCU, took advantage of good field position to help the team to a 13-0 lead; two Mike Nugent field goals of 24 and 47 yards and a 2-yard TD pass to tight end Jermaine Gresham.

But the Browns came alive in the second quarter after a long Joshua Cribbs kickoff return.

Cleveland QB Colt McCoy threw a 34-yard TD pass to tight end Benjamin Watson halfway through the second quarter for their first score.

McCoy then threw a 56-yard completion to Mohammed Massaquoi, the longest pass of his career, set up a 2-yard TD to tight end Evan Moore, three plays later and the Browns led 14-13.

McCoy, is the Browns’ eighth different opening-game QB in the last nine seasons.

The Browns led 14-13 at the half despite shooting itself in the foot with 10 penalties for 67 yards. While the Bengals were concered about their rookie QB Dalton, who had his right wrist injured in the second quarter. Although X-rays did not show anything severe at halftime, the Bengals coaching staff turned to the veteran Gradkowski, who had looked very capable as a backup during the preseason.

Dalton looked very poised and under control in his NFL debut. He completed 10 of 15 passes for 81 yards for a TD and a quarterback rating of 102.4.

During the game, Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis became the longest tenured coach in team history when he began his ninth season with the team. He passed owner and founder Paul Brown (1969-75) and Sam Wyche (1984-91). He will soon become the winningest coach in franchise history.

The Bengals played the game without starting offensive guard Bobbie Williams, who is serving a four-game suspension for violating the NFL policy against using performance enhancing substances.

Winslow gets revenge on Browns as Tampa Bay wins, 17-14

Kellen Winslow, Jr. spent 5 controversial seasons with the Cleveland Browns. He was supposed to be the second coming of Ozzie Newsome of the Browns glory days and a mirror image of his Hall of Fame dad, Kellen Winslow, Sr. of the San Diego Chargers. But he was either injured or not playing up to standards.

On Sunday, in Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida, Winslow set the tone earlier by running out the tunnel during pregame introductions and waving a Tampa Bay flag in front of the Cleveland bench. The crowd of 47,211 roared with approval as the Buccaneers went on to defeat Cleveland, 17-14.

But the real hero for the Buccaneers was their quarterback Josh Freeman, who returned from a three-week layoff due to a broken thumb and threw for 182 yards and two touchdowns. Winslow had four catches for 32 yards.

Early in the game, Cleveland moved the ball at will and built a 14-3 lead, but struggled thereafter. They had three costly turnovers which helped Tampa Bay win the game.

Jake Delhomme went 20 of 37 for 227 yards and two interceptions in his debut for Cleveland, who have not won an opening game since 2004. They have a record of 1-11 in opening games since the team returned as a new franchise in 1999.

The Browns received a 41-yard touchdown reception from Mohammed Massaquoi and a 10-yard TD run from Peyton Hills which put them up 14-3.

Browns show offense at Green Bay; Dawson wins game with 2FG’s in final 1:27

Eventhough it’s just the exhibition season, the Cleveland Browns showed they’ve improved just against the Green Bay Packers alone.

In 2009, in two meetings the Browns lost to the Packers 17-0 in the preseason and 31-3 in the regular season.

At venerable Lambeau Field in Green Bay, Wisconsin, Saturday night, Cleveland pulled out the win,27-24 as reliable kicker Phil Dawson made field goals of 58 and 46 yards in the final 1:27; the game-winner was good as time expired from the game clock.

The Browns offense was very good and very productive scoring on their first two possessions and three of their first four. Plus, there were no penalties.

New quarterback Jake Delhomme took the first series and led the team 80 yards in 11 plays. Delhomme completed 6 of 7 passes,  throwing three completions to Mohammed Massaquoi and twice to Ohio State product Brian Robiske. Jerome Harrison scored the touchdown from 4 yards out on big block from fullback Lawrence Vickers.

Backup quarterback Seneca Wallace came on in relief of Delhomme and all he did was kept the offense moving and scoring.

The mobile Wallace kept the Packers off-balance enough to throw touchdown passes of 13 yards to Brian Robiske and after a nice pump fake, a 20 yarder to Ben Watson.

In three possessions, Wallace was 4 of 8 passing for 72 yards and two touchdowns.

The Packers could not run the ball at all gaining 14 yards on seven attempts in the first half.

The Browns did have trouble with Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers who completed 12 of 13 passes for 159 yards and one touchdown.
