Rookie QB Weeden debuts in Browns 19-17 win over Detroit

Cleveland Browns rookie QB Brandon Weeden had quite a few obstacles in his way in his NFL debut at Ford Field in Detroit.

He was without fellow rookie, RB Trent Richardson and TE Ben Watson and he lost WR Mohamed Massaquoi after the first play of the game.

But the 28-year-old from Oklahoma State hung in despite being shaky.

In three series against of action against a very aggressive Lions defense Friday night, Weeden completed 3 of 9 passes for 62 yards, with one lost fumble, one interception and a dismal 19.0 quarterback rating in the Browns 19-17 win.

Weeden started the game off on a very high note, completing a 12-yard pass to Massaquoi and a 34-yarder down the deep left sidelined to rookie Travis Benjamin.

The other quarterbacks did well in relief of Weeden.

Colt McCoy was 6 of 8 for 88 yards. Seneca Wallace threw a third quarter touchdown to rookie Brad Smelley to cut the Lions lead down to 14-12. Then Thad Lewis led the fourth quarter charge with Adonis Thomas scoring from 3 yards out.

The Browns won the game on a 45-yard field goal by Jeff Wolfert’s 45-yarder with 28 seconds left in the game.

Baltimore beats Cleveland 20-10

There was no surprise that the Ravens beat the Browns in Cleveland Stadium on Sunday, 20-10. But the surprise was the bad strategy decided upon by Browns head coach Eric Mangini.

The Browns kicked a field goal at the end of the first half, just to keep the ball away from the Baltimore Ravens.

On the second half kickoff, trailing by three points, Cleveland tried to trick the Ravens with an onsides kick which failed to go the required 10 yards. The Ravens got the ball in good field position, at the Browns 38 and three plays later they scored to put the game away for good.

The Browns are now 5-10 on the season and 10-21 under Eric Mangini, who is on the hot seat again.

Rookie quarterback Colt McCoy threw three interceptions in his worst performance in his seventh game as a starter.

There was also a fumble by wide receiver Mohamed Massaquoi.

The Browns did score for the second straight on a trick play as Massaquoi using a receiver razzle-dazzle option pass, foundĀ  Brian Robiske, who circled behind cornerback Chris Carr and cradled the ball while hitting the turf. The replay showed the ball was caught and touchdown.

The Ravens, now 11-4, sewed up a wild card berth in the playoffs but can be division champs if the Browns can pull off an upset of the Pittsburgh Steelers.
