Crew selects Cunningham in Re-Entry Draft; proven goal scorer

The Columbus Crew must’ve been listening to all of the disgruntled fans who have been hard on the franchise this off-season for getting rid of proven players and fan favorites like Frankie Hejduk and Guillermo Barros Schelotto.

The entered the MLS Re-Entry Draft and picked a proven goal scorer and former fan favorite in Columbus; Jeff Cunningham.

If the Crew are successful in signing in, Cunningham could end up the all-time scoring leader in MLS history in 2011.

The Crew jumped at the chance of selecting the veteran scorer, who spent the last three years with FC Dallas and recently played in the MLS Cup against Colorado.

Cunningham, who is 34 and still one of the fastest players in the MLS, scored 62 goals for Columbus from 1998 to 2004 to tie Brian McBride for the franchise lead.

His 132 career goals is second to the MLS mark set by Jaime Moreno, played for D.C. United and is also a free agent.

Cunningham left the Crew in January of 2005, when he was traded to Colorado. Since that period of time, he has played for the Rapids, Real Salt Lake and Toronto FC before playing in Dallas.

Known for his temperamental nature when he played for the Crew, the scoring forward has matured over the past years. He has found his niche playing in a limited role, accounting for 28 goals and nine assists while starting only 36 of 55 games and helped FC Dallas reach the MLS Cup finals this year.
