Chicago White Sox outfielder Carlos Quentin has been selected as the American League Player of the Week for the first week of the season ending April 3rd.

In three games over the opening weekend, Quentin hit an AL-leading .545 (6-for-11) with a home run and three runs scored, while matching Major League-bests with three doubles and seven RBI’s. Quentin also posted a 1.091 slugging percentage and a .583 on-base percentage. On Opening Day, the Stanford University product connected on his first home run of the season, a two-run blast in the third inning of a 15-10 win over the Cleveland Indians at Progressive Field.

The Bellflower, California native collected three hits with five RBI’s and scored two runs in the victory. Quentin’s five RBI’s tied Sammy Sosa (1991) for the second-most by a White Sox player on Opening Day, trailing Minnie Minoso’s six RBI’s in 1951 (courtesy of the Elias Sports Bureau). On April 2nd, the 29-year-old collected two doubles, two RBI’s and one run scored en route to an 8-3 win over the Indians.

Since arriving in the American League in 2008, the right-handed hitting slugger has tallied 84 home runs, including 77 as an outfielder, which is tied with Curtis Granderson of the New York Yankees for the most home runs in the A.L. by an outfielder. This marks Quentin’s second career weekly award, his first coming on June 27, 2010.
