The Cleveland Indians are starting to clean up their 40-man roster in order to sign free agents or to make trades.

In the process, the Indians have outrighted RHP Mitch Talbot and outfielder Jerad Head off their 40-man roster, putting them on the free agent market.

Talbot spent most of the season dealing with elbow injuries. He went 2-6 with a 6.64 ERA in 12 starts for Cleveland.

Head was a September call up from Triple-A Columbus and he batted .125 (3-for-24) in 10 games with the Indians. With the Minor-League National Champions Columbus Clippers, Head batted .284 with 24 home runs and 70 RBI’s.

Clippers win Governors’ Cup as IL champions again; tops Lehigh Valley 3 games to 1

The Columbus Clippers have proven for the second year in a row that they are the kingpins in the International League.

The team was the 2010 IL champions and the National champions of Minor League Baseball.

In 2011, the Clippers beat the Lehigh Valley IronPigs, 4-1 in the deciding game in Coca-Cola Park in Allentown, Pennsylvania to wrap up its second straight Governors’ Cup title, 3 games to 1 and a return trip to the Triple-A national championship game to play the Pacific Coast League winner in Albuquerque, New Mexico on Tuesday.

The architect of this domination is the parent Cleveland Indians, but the man steering the ship is manager Mike Sarbaugh, who also was a good manager while running the Double-A Akron Aeros.

The Clippers won an IL-best 88 games in the regular season despite overcoming 183 player moves involving them, Cleveland and Akron. They won the IL West Division by 12 gaves over the Indianapolis Indians. They beat Durham and Lehigh Valley, two quality teams in the IL playoffs. It goes to show everybody that the Indians farm system is loaded with talent.

Winning the decisive game, was pitcher Paolo Espino, who pitched seven innings, allowing four hits and one run, a homer by Brandon Moss, and struck out five. His pitching followed the strong starts of fellow hurlers Mitch Talbot and Joe Martinez in games 2 and 3 respectively.

The Cleveland Indians have outrighted pitcher Mitch Talbot to the Columbus Clippers.

The Indians designated Talbot for assignment on July 31 to make room on the 40-man roster for Ubaldo Jimenez, who they received in a trade with Colorado.

Talbot had a 2-6 record at the time he was designated, with an ERA of 6.33 in 11 starts for Cleveland this season.

No team claimed him so the Tribe outrighted him to Columbus. He’ll fill the role as starter or reliever.

At the time he was designated for assignment, Talbot was on an injury rehab assignment with Columbus with lower back stiffness.
