Reds prospect Hamilton chasing Minor League steals record in a season

The media who follow the Cincinnati Reds and the Bakersfield Blaze know that shortstop Billy Hamilton is a very important player in the future of the major league team.

Hamilton is a speedy, leadoff  hitter that the Reds have needed and wanted for years.

General manager Walt Jocketty continues to ignore and downplay the idea from fans and media that Hamilton should be called up during September as a situational late-inning baserunner to steal bases. Jocketty is looking at the big picture, the future.

There is no doubt the Reds need a leadoff hitter better than Zack Cozart or Chris Heisey, but Hamilton has to improve in other areas, like fielding. He made 39 errors last year for the Low-A Dayton Dragons. This year for the Advanced-A Bakersfield Blaze, the speed merchant has committed 24.

Hamilton has been the talk of Minor League Baseball this season.

He has a chance to break the all-time minor league record for steals of 145 by Vince Coleman in 1983. Everybody said that record would never be broken. But that was before Hamilton came on the scene.

In 2011 for Dayton, Hamilton lead the minor leagues with 103 stolen bases. This year, as of today, Friday, July 6, the Mississippi native has 103.

The 21-year-old Hamilton says he is just “letting the game come to him and not trying to get caught up in the 145 steals record.”

He has been caught 21 times, so it’s 103-124, a success rate of 82.4%. An excellent rating!

A switch-hitter, the 6’1, 160-pounder, who probably will end up in the Reds outfield in left-field, has drawn 49 walks and has a .326 batting average with 78 runs scored, 108 base hits, 18 doubles, 9 triples and 30 RBI’s.

The big question for the Reds management is, when will Hamilton be moved to Double-A? He has proven that Single-A is no match for him!

She also spent four years at her alma mater Mississippi. Ross had a career record in 16 seasons at the Division I of 324-161, with 12 NCAA tournament appearances and two WNIT bids.

Dayton rallies for overtime win at Mississippi, 79-71

Chris Johnson slams on Ole Miss back in April and in the win at Ole Miss (courtesy of Dayton athletics)

The Ole Miss Rebels got off to a hot start early in the game and led 44-36 at the half. The Rebels shot 56 percent from the floor and knocked down 7-of-15 shots from the three-point line in the opening half.

But the Flyers, behind a stifling defensive effort in the second half, the University of Dayton Flyers rallied from a 16-point deficit to defeat the Mississippi Rebels 78-71 in overtime in Oxford, Mississippi.

Chris Johnson led the Dayton attack with a double-double of 20 points and 11 rebounds. Josh Parker added 18 points and Josh Benson matched his career-high with 10 points off the bench.

Juwan Staten dished out eight assists and had five points to help the Flyers improve to 3-0 overall and pick up their first road win of the season.

This is the third time in coach Brian Gregory’s tenure that Dayton has started the season 3-0. The previous two seasons, 2003-2004 and 2008-2009, UD played in the NCAA Tournament.

In a rematch of the NIT semifinal from last season, Dayton never led through regulation and trailed by 16 early in the second half but mounted a furious comeback.

The Flyers tightened up on the defensive end and held Ole Miss to 30 percent shooting from the floor and 0-for-10 in the second half from three-point range.

In overtime, the Flyers took command with Staten and Parker taking control.

Dayton’s ability to hit free throws, 79 percent (26-of-33) aided in the comeback.
