Browns’ Shurmur decides to add offensive coordinator

The fans and media of the Cleveland Browns have said all along that the team needs an offensive coordinator above all else.

It was evident during several games this year that the team was scrambling around to calls plays at the last minute and got plays into the huddle late.

Browns head coach Pat Shurmur said recently that he would begin a search for an offensive coordinator and is willing to forgo all play calling and just oversee the entire team as most NFL coach’s do. But only if he gets the right guy.

Although Shurmur offered no names, there are a couple of people he could hire due to past experiences. Brad Childress, whom Shurmur worked with on Andy Reid’s staff in Philadelphia and Mike Sherman, a former assistant with Mike Holmgren with Green Bay.

MEINEKE CAR CARE BOWL: Texas A&M (6-6) vs. Northwestern (6-6)

The Meineke Car Care Bowl in Houston on December 31 pits two teams with 6-6 records, Texas A&M and Northwestern.

The Aggies have fired head coach Mike Sherman due to the team falling shy of high expectations.

Tim DeRuyter, the team’s defensive coordinator, has been given the ship to run until after the game on New Year’s Eve. The Aggies lost four of five games to end the season.

Northwestern had a bad streak of their own in the middle of the season, losing to Army, Illinois, Michigan, Iowa and Penn State before winning four of the last five games to get bowl eligible.

The Wildcats are in the postseason for a program-record fourth season in a row. The fifth-year seniors on the team have 36 wins in their careers, the best ever for a five year group at the Chicago area school. But it has been since January 1, 1949, that Northwestern has ended the season with a bowl win. They won the Rose Bowl that year.

The Wildcats are led by QB Dan Persa, who completed 74.2% of his passes in their ball-control, horizontal passing offense.

Texas A&M’s QB is Ryan Tanneyhill who was 12th in the nation in passing and he threw 28 touchdown passes to talented receivers Ryan Swope and Jeff Fuller.

Texas A&M has fired head coach Mike Sherman after the Aggies finished the regular season, a disappointing 6-6.

The 56-year-old Sherman was just 25-25 in four seasons at the College Station, Texas school.

Sherman had three years left on his contract with a buyout of around $5.8 million.

Sherman has coached at several colleges and universities in college football: Pittsburgh, Tulane, Holy Cross and UCLA. In the pros, he has coached for Green Bay twice, Seattle and Houston Texans.
