COLUMBUS CITY LEAGUE BOYS BASKETBALL: East drops 57-32 decision to Watterson

(courtesy Bishop Watterson)

Coming into this week, the East High Tigers felt really good about themselves having won three in a row over Briggs, Walnut Ridge and Linden to even their record at 5-5.

With the win on Tuesday over Linden, still looming was Mifflin on Friday and Watterson on Saturday.

The Tigers had a complete meltdown in the fourth quarter against a pressing, fast-breaking Mifflin team and lost 82-78 on’s HIGH SCHOOL BOUNCE.

Then comes Saturday and a meeting with tough Central Catholic League power, Bishop Watterson.

The result was a disappointing week when they felt they could win all three if not two of the games.

Bryan Jackson led the Eagles with a season-high 26 points and 11 rebounds for host Watterson who improves to 7-1 after the 57-32 win over East.

The Tigers dropped two games under .500 at 5-7.

Watterson led 17-9 at the end of the first quarter. But East closed to within 22-16 at the half. The Eagles took total control in the 3rd quarter with a 15-8 run to move the score to 37-24 and the rout was on.

COLUMBUS CITY LEAGUE: Beechcroft keeps Mifflin winless with 72-67 triumph

The Beechcroft Cougars have a nice foursome on the basketball court this season with Maurice Hale, Khaleed Franklin, Robert Martin and Linden-McKinley transfer Patrick Ngene.

Friday night against Columbus City League North Division rival Mifflin, the Cougars only needed three of the four to lead them to a win.

Franklin with 26 points, Ngene with 20 and Martin with 19 combined for a total of 65 points in leading Beechcroft to their initial win of the season, 72-67. Ngene pulled down a game-high 14 rebounds.

The Cougars are 1-1, 1-0.

Mifflin falls to a disappointing 0-3,0-1 in the final season for 14-year head basketball coach Gene Caslin.

Mifflin tried to rally late in the game but could not contain the Cougars scoring trio.

J Murrell led Mifflin with 15 points.

COLUMBUS CITY LEAGUE FOOTBALL, Week 4: Brookhaven dominates East in 47-6 victory

There is no doubt that the Columbus East Tigers are an improved team from the 1-9 bunch from 2011.

It’s understandable with Lewis Carter at the helm that the team would be improved.

But the Tigers still have to prove that they can beat the City North Division heavyweight teams of Beechcroft, Brookhaven, Mifflin and Northland.

Brookhaven was the first test and the Tigers failed in Friday night’s contest, losing 47-6 at home.

The Bearcats (2-2, 1-0) led 27-6 at the half and coasted from there on.

Marquis Greeenhow rushed for three touchdowns to lead the Bearcats.
