David Lighty leads Buckeyes to win over Miami; wins 100th game in career

It seems like David Lighty has been at Ohio State forever.

After all, he did come in with the class that included Greg Oden, Mike Conley and Daequan Cook. But he decided to stay and has been one of the leaders and consistent performers despite several injuries along the way.

He said he never knew if he had won 100 or more games in his career or if he was getting close.

The fifth-year senior scored 16 of his 21 points during a 10-minute stretch in the second half to help the number-3 Buckeyes distance themselves from Miami University of Ohio in Value City Arena, 66-45.

All told Lighty scored 19 points in the second half.

With that, Lighty is in the 100 win column as an OSU player.

According to Ohio State athletics game notes, Lighty needs 11 more victories to set a record for an Ohio State player. Former walk-ons Danny Peters and Mark Titus played on Buckeyes teams that won 110 games. Jamar Butler and Matt Terwilliger were a part of 104 wins.

Lighty received help from Deshaun Thomas with with 15 points and Jared Sullinger with 12 points for 5-0 Ohio State.

Orlando Williams led 2-4 Miami with 13 points.

Steelers catch a break, Big Ben’s suspension cut to four games

As it had been rumored for several weeks, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell has reduced Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger’s suspension from six games to four.

The Findlay, Ohio native met with Goodell early Friday morning and was told that he could return October 17 against the Cleveland Browns.

Ben Roethlisberger (NFL)

Roethlisberger was suspended back in April for violating the league’s personal conduct policy, but Goodell said that he would review his player’s behavior over the next few weeks and months. The commissioner is pleased that the quarterback has followed the NFL’s guidelines and has stayed clear of trouble.

“Big Ben” was accused of sexually assaulting a Georgia college student following a night of drinking in a bar in Milledgeville, Georgia on March 5. He was not charged by Georgia police.

The commissioner says that Roethlisberger’s reinstatement is contingent on him continuing to adhere to the program established by the leagues’ advisors and staying out of any further violations of the personal conduct policy.

Before the Miami University of Ohio graduate returns, Pittsburgh hosts Atlanta, plays at Tennessee and Tampa Bay and then hosts Baltimore before the October 10 bye date. Roethlisberger can begin practicing with Pittsburgh on October 4.
