Miami Redhawks honors former basketball coach Charlie Coles

Charlie Coles

When Charlie Coles announced his retirement as head basketball coach at Miami University last March, most media members wondered if he could actually stay away from Millett Hall, home of the RedHawks.

Well, he has.

The 71-year-old Coles, who still resides in Oxford, Ohio, made his first appearance at a RedHawks game yesterday afternoon.

Miami  honored their long-time coach before the final regular-season home game against Kent State.

Coles retired after 16 seasons on the Miami bench with 263 wins. He is a 1965 graduate of the university.

Before settling in at Miami, Coles, who was always popular with media and fans of opposing Mid-American Conference schools, coached at Central Michigan for six years where he compiled a record of 355-308. While there, he coached Dan Majerle, who went to have an All-Star NBA career.

His 218 wins in MAC games are the most in conference history.

In a recent interview, Coles said that he spends his retirement helping coach his granddaughter Jazz’s sixth-grade AAU basketball team.
