Beasley signs to play in Mexico

Mexican soccer team Puebla of Mexico City, has signed American forward DaMarcus Beasley to a contract.

The Fort Wayne, Indiana, native, who plays on the left wing, earlier in his career played for the Chicago Fire.

The 29-year-old recently completed his overseas season with German team Hannover 96, where he seldom got into a match.

MLS cancels SuperLiga to raise profile of CONCACAF

Major League Soccer commissioner Don Garber has announced that the SuperLiga tournament which features MLS teams against Mexican squads will not be played this year and the league will instead focus on getting more attention put towards the CONCACAF Champions League.

The Columbus Crew had qualified to play this season because it was one of the top four teams in the MLS that did not qualify to play in the 2011-2012 Champions League.

The Carolina Panthers have selected Ron Rivera to inject new life and vision into the NFL’s worst team.

The San Diego Chargers defensive coordinator is the second Latino head coach in NFL history.

He joins former Oakland/Los Angeles Raiders and Seattle Seahawks coach Tom Flores as the only Latino head coaches. Rivera, who is of Puerto Rican and Mexican heritage, has his first head coaching opportunity.

Rivera, who replaced John Fox, let go after nine season and now is in Denver, coached a San Diego defense that ranked tops in the NFL in total defense and pass defense this season. The former Chicago Bears linebacker also was defensive coordinator for the Bears from 2004-2006.

CONCACAF announces Columbus Crew will play Real Salt Lake in 2011

CONCACAF has announced that the Columbus Crew will play Real Salt Lake in the Champions League quarterfinals in 2011.

The two-game, total-goals series will be the first between two American teams in the Champions League knockout stage. It will be played in Columbus on February 22, 23 or 24 in Columbus and in Sandy, Utah, on March 1, 2 or 3.

The winner will play a semifinal series against the winner of the Olimpia (Honduras)-Saprissa (Costa Rica) series.



The Crew and Real Salt Lake would not play a Mexican team until the final in mid-April.

Four Mexican teams were paired in the other quarterfinals. A Mexican team has won the Champions League five straight years.
