Fowler falls out of contention with 84 in final round of Memorial

Usually if a golfer has a bad round of golf, he will not spend time with the media or the gallery of fans.

But fan-favorite Rickie Fowler showed his professionalism by spending time with the media and spent 30 minutes signing autographs for the fans. Nobody would’ve blamed the former Oklahoma State product if he wanted to go to the clubhouse and hide out after a disappointing Sunday at the Memorial.

Fowler was 3rd after Saturday’s third round, three shots from the lead held by Spencer Levin.

But on Sunday, he fell faster than Haley’s Comet in the final round, shooting a whopping 12-over-par 84 to drop from third place at 5-under-par to a tie for 52nd place with three other golfers at 7-over par. That 84 matched the fourth-highest final round in the 37 years of the Memorial’s history. The highest was back in 1981 by Gary Hallberg with an 88.

Fowler shot a 40 on the front nine and a 44 on the back nine.

His troubles started early in the round at number-2 where he pulled a drive and on number-3 where he missed a three-putt from 5 1/2 feet missed.

The collapse would indicate fatigue, but Fowler said “no”.

His collapse was really stunning considering that he has been one of the hottest and most consistent PGA Tour golfers the past two months, winning once and finishing in the top ten in four tournaments.

The 84 is Fowler’s highest score on the PGA Tour. His previous high score was a 79 in the final round of the Northern Trust Open earlier this season.

McIlroy looking to rejoin PGA Tour in 2012

Rory McIlroy (file photo)

Rory McIlroy has had a strong season on the PGA Tour, that is definitely considering joining the tour again in 2012.

It’s quite a reversal for the Northern Ireland native who had dropped his tour membership after the 2010 season.

The 22-year-old knows that his decision would mean playing at least five more United States events each year. He says his favorite events including the Memorial, are in the U.S.

McIlroy does not like playing on the European Tour due to it being wet and cool all the time.

Another reason is that he is dating the #1 women’s tennis player in the world, Caroline Wozniacki.

MEMORIAL TOURNAMENT 2nd round: Stricker takes control with hole-in-one

Steve Stricker chats with media ( photo)

Steve Stricker is the world’s number 8 golfer, but most fans can’t believe that he is that good, but he is.

He is one of those golfers who is quiet and with hardly any flair of fanfare.

In Friday’s second round, he used a strong finish to his day on the course with late hole-in-one which helped him take a three-stroke lead at the halfway point of the Memorial.

His ace, on the 185-yard number 8 hole, his next to last, gave him a 5-under-par run on the final five holes for Stricker, who finished with a 5-under-par 67 and 9-under total for the first two rounds.

On the day, Stricker hit 12 of 14 fairways (79 percent) and 15 of 18 greens in regulation (72 percent).

Stricker extended his made cuts streak to 33 this week at the Memorial.

Ricky Barnes with a 70 and Rory McIlroy 72 share second place.
