Louisville leaves Big East for the ACC; replaces Maryland

The Atlantic Coast Conference has raided the Big East again.

On Wednesday, the presidents and chancellors unanimously voted to add Louisville as a replacement for Maryland.

Maryland announced last week that it would be joining the Big Ten in 2014.

The ACC also considered two other Big East schools, Cincinnati and Connecticut.

Adding the Cardinals brings the ACC to 14 full members, with former Big East rivals Pittsburgh and Syracuse joining conference play in 2013.

Louisville will be the seventh Big East school to leave for the ACC in the last 10 years.

Obviously, by adding Notre Dame, Pittsburgh, Syracuse and Louisville in the past 15 months has made the ACC even stronger in football and especially in basketball.

Pitcher Dave Boswell, who won 20 games for the Minnesota Twins in 1969 despite missing a couple of weeks after a fight with manager Billy Martin, has died at age 67 of a heart attack at his home in Joppa, Maryland.

Following a 1969 game in Detroit,  Boswell got into a fight with teammate Bob Allison and Manager Billy Martin outside the Lindell AC bar close to Tiger Stadium. After knocking out Allison with one punch, Martin knocked out Boswell giving him a cut that required 20 stitches. Despite the off-field injury, Boswell would still go on to win 20 games in 1969, helping the Twins win the American League West Division.

Boswell had a record of 68-56 for Minnesota, Detroit and Baltimore from 1964-1971.

The Baltimore, Maryland native pitched in 205 games, 151 of them as a starting pitcher. He pitched 37 complete games, including six shutouts, and finished with a 3.52 ERA.

During the American League Championship Series,  Boswell would lose 1-0 in 11 innings to the Baltimore Orioles and  pitcher Dave McNally. He later revealed that he had suffered a career-ending arm injury during the game on a slider thrown to strike out slugger Frank Robinson in the bottom of the 10th inning.

Thomas fired by Florida International University after three seasons

Florida International University is located in Miami, Florida.

The school is a Mid-major playing in the Sun Belt Conference of NCAA Division I. The enrollment is 47,966 students.

Three years ago the athletics department came up with the idea of bringing in a name basketball coach who could lure “big-time talent to the tropical paradise of South Florida. They felt they could win.

Entering the picture was former NBA star and coach Isiah Thomas to take a risk with an unknown program.

Thomas signed a five-year deal with the school to take the job, accepting nothing in base salary for his first season but agreeing to receive almost half of any gross revenues from ticket sales, commissions collected on food and beverage concessions and sponsorships.

Three years into the agreement, FIU did not see the fruits of his labor enough to reward the final two years of his contract.

The basketball program never was able to generate the enthusiasm that the school administration and Thomas had hoped. The Panthers averaged 1,071 fans at home this season.

One of the problems is that FIU tried to schedule games at home when the NBA’s Miami Heat were on the road and sometimes that didn’t work out because game dates and times have to be mutually agreed upon by both schools and the league it plays in.

Other factors that hurt FIU, is that the University of Miami draws huge crowds and has a winning team plus, Miami being a paradise city as mentioned before, there is the beach, surfing and volleyball for people to engage in.

The Panthers schedule was tough as well playing George Mason, Oral Roberts, Maryland, Dayton, Middle Tennessee State, South Alabama and Western Kentucky.

Thomas, the Basketball Hall of Fame player, was fired last Friday with a record of 26-55. His teams never won more than 11 games in a season.

FIU has never been a basketball power. The school’s last winning season was 1999-2000, and its winning percentage of .315 since that period of time is one of the worst in college basketball, 329th out of 344 Division I men’s programs, according to STATS LLC.
