BOYS HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL Tournament action: Africentric runs over Centerburg in Division III play

Game report from Russell North & Ralph Mushi

Every year, high school basketball players say they hate to play games in the Ohio Expo Center Coliseum aka the Fairgrounds Coliseum. Their reasons include its cold, has bad lighting, bad sight lines and not often-filled and just not good if you’re a shooter.

The Columbus Horizon used to say the same thing when they played in the Coliseum back in the late 80′s.

All of those old superstitions did not effect Kalomo Figueroa-Jackson of Africentric in their game against Centerburg.

The Nubians guard connected on several three-point baskets en route to a career-high 28 points as #3 Africentric ran over Centerburg 78-35 in a Division III district semifinal.

The 6’5 senior went 10 of 13 from the floor. His running mate at guard Marquice Taylor added 20 points and had seven assists in helping the City League South member go to 15-7 on the season.

The Nubians as a team shot the ball just as well, 29 of 45 (59.2 percent) and made 10 three-point goals.

Africentric smothered the slower Trojans with full-court and half-court pressure to keep them out of rhythm, allowing only 28.9 percent from the field and causing 27 turnovers.

Centerburg ended the season at 13-10 and were led in scoring by Garrison Myles with 15 points.

Kalamo Figueroa-Jackson knocked down seven 3-point baskets en route to 28 points to lead the Nubians, but the key to the game’s outcome was free throw shooting.

Marquice Taylor made two free throws with 14 seconds left to seal the game for Africentric.

The Nubians improve to 12-7, 9-5, while the 76ers drop to 11-8, 9-5.
