TOLEDO-OSU RECAP: Toledo players know they missed an opportunity for an upset

Terrell Anderson, Austin Dantin, Terrance Owens and Malcolm Riley represented the Toledo Rockets football team on the postgame podium in the visitors media room in Ohio Stadium after the 27-22 loss to the Buckeyes on Saturday afternoon.

Those players had the look of disappointment because they knew that themselves and their teammates blew a golden chance to be the first MAC team to beat the Buckeyes.

But the Rockets hurt themselves with penalties and a shaky punt team. Toledo was penalized 14 times for 102 yards. They had a key holding call against their defense on Ohio State’s bad pass on a 3rd-and-goal in the third quarter and it gave the Buckeyes new life. Carlos Hyde scored the go-ahead TD on the very next play.

The Rockets defense led by Riley and Anderson, confused the Buckeyes offense with blitzes and stunts and put an extra man in the box on running plays. It is surprising that Ohio State ended up with 112 yards total on 34 carries.

The Rockets offense gave the OSU defense fits with its athleticism, speed and play-making abilities. The Rockets use a spread offense and used Springfield, Ohio native Eric Page, as their primary weapon. The Buckeyes had trouble finding him as Toledo lined him up in different spots: wide right, wide left, in the slots, in the backfield and at quarterback. From the QB spot, Page threw a completed pass to junior TE Hank Keighley for a two-point conversion in the first quarter, to put the Rockets up 8-7. Page is 5-for-6 throwing the football in his UT career.

With the loss, the Rockets fell to 6-9 all-time against teams ranked in the Top 25, including 1-8 in the opposing stadium.

Toledo is now 6-15 all-time versus the Big Ten, but a very respectable 6-10 since breaking through with a win over Purdue in 1992.

Ohio State is 18-0 against Mid-American Conference teams.
