Miami volleyball pick second in Mid-American Conference poll

The Miami University women’s volleyball team has been picked to finish second in the MAC East Division.

Ohio was selected to win the East and Northern Illinois the West.

The RedHawks are led by senior middle hitter Cassie Farrell who has been picked to the All-MAC preseason East Division team.

Miami RedHawks visits Rhode Island in CBI Tournament

The Miami University men’s basketball team has accepted a bid to participate in the 2011 College Basketball Invitational Presented by Zebra Pen and will travel to Kingston, Rhode Island to play the Rams today (Wednesday, March 16 at 7 p.m.

This will be the RedHawks second appearance in the CBI, also earning a bid in the inaugural tournament in 2008 when the RedHawks went up against eventual CBI champion Tulsa.

This will be the first meeting between the teams.

Armed with the nation’s toughest non-conference schedule, Miami enters the postseason with a 16-16 record. The RedHawks posted an 11-5 Mid-American Conference record to finish second in the MAC East Division and earn the #3 seed in the MAC Tournament before being knocked out by the eventual champion, Akron Zips.

Rhode Island enters the game with a 19-13 overall record and a 9-7 mark in the Atlantic 10. The Rams won its opening round game in the A-10 Tournament against St. Louis before losing to eventual champion Richmond in the quarterfinals.

Bobcats shut-off Rockets, 71-58

The Ohio Bobcats put another dagger into the Toledo Rockets who are having another miserable, losing season at 4-22, 1-9 in the MAC, with a 71-58 win.

Toledo used to be an annual Mid-American Conference championship threat, but has fallen on hard times the past 6 years under Stan Joplin, Gene Cross and now Ted Kolwalcyk.

Tommy Freeman scored 21, all on a career-high seven 3-point baskets in giving Ohio an overall record of 12-12, 5-5 in the MAC East Division.

Toledo has now lost sixth straight loss.

Miami beats Akron; tied for first in MAC East

Trevor Cook kicked four field goals, and Thomas Merriweather rushed for a career-high 141 yards to lead the Miami RedHawks to a 19-14 Mid-American Conference win over Akron.

With the win, the RedHawks (7-4, 6-1) have fought back into a first-place tie with Ohio in the MAC East Division.

Freshman QB Austin Boucher of Miami, starting in place of the injured Zac Dysert, completed 22 of 32 passes for 213 yards.

Akron having a horrendous season, are 0-11, 0-7 in the MAC East.

Ohio Bobcats double-up Buffalo, 34-17

Boo Jackson threw two touchdown passes, caught a scoring pass and ran for a touchdown for the Ohio University Bobcats in a 34-17 win over the Buffalo Bulls in Mid-American Conference action in Athens, Ohio.

Ohio is now 7-3 overall, 5-1 in the MAC East Division. Buffalo falls to 2-7, 1-4 in the MAC East.

Jackson opened the scoring for Ohio with a 1-yard run and caught a 26-yard scoring pass from Phil Bates on the Bobcats’ next drive.

In the second half, Jackson kept at it; throwing two 15-yard touchdown passes to Terrence McCrae.
