Cavs dominate Pacers, 90-76; fighting Knicks & Hawks for 8th spot in Eastern Conference playoffs

There was a time when everybody said the Cleveland Cavaliers could not win without All-Star point guard Kyrie Irving.

That statement has been proven wrong as peaking Cavs have won four of the past five games without Irving.

In the meantime, other players are stepping up. Dion Waiters, Luol Deng, Jarrett Jack, Tristan Thompson and Spencer Hawes have chipped in to lead the young team.

On Sunday afternoon, Cleveland dominated the East’s best team, the Indiana Pacers, 90-76.

Walters scored 19 points, Deng knocked down 15 and Thompson controlled the boards with 16 rebounds to help in chasing down the Atlanta Hawks for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

The Cavs, who are 14-12 since February 5, might be getting Irving back into action this week as they play at Orlando on Wednesday, at  Atlanta on Friday and host Charlotte on Saturday. The Hawks are injured and sputtering having lost six in a row.

Cleveland ended a nine-game losing streak to the Pacers.

Derrick Rose scored 28 points and dished out 11 rebounds as the host Chicago Bulls won for the 13th time in 15 games holding off the Cleveland Cavaliers 100-91.

The Bulls trailed by 10 points against Cleveland, who were without three of their best players, Anderson Varejao (broken cheekbone), Mo Williams (left hip flexor strain) and Daniel Gibson ( left thigh contusion).

Rallying from the 10-point deficit, Chicago outscored Cleveland 32-9 in the third quarter and hung on after nearly blowing a 15-point lead in the fourth quarter, sending the Cavs to their 16th loss in the past 17 games.

Luol Deng had 23 points and Carlos Boozer scored 20 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for Chicago.

Cleveland was led by J.J. Hickson with 21 and Antawn Jamison scoring 19.

Carlos Boozer chooses Chicago Bulls as his new team

compiled from staff, wire, Chicago Bulls and NBA news

Carlos Boozer has left the mountains of Utah for the Windy City of Chicago.

The two-time All-Star forward agreed to a deal on Wednesday and is leaving the Utah Jazz after six seasons. The deal is believed to be a five-year deal.

Boozer averaged 19.5 points and 11.2 rebounds last season. His signing gives the Bulls a formidable pair in the frontcourt with Joakim Noah and also Luol Deng and All-Star point guard Derrick Rose.

The Bulls were looking to add several superstar free agents after back-to-back exits in the first-round of the playoffs.

Cleveland polishes off Chicago in Game 5, 96-94

LeBron James just missed a triple-double despite having a sore right elbow, and the Cleveland Cavaliers advanced to the next round with Boston by beating Chicago 96-94 in Game 5 on Tuesday night in what has rumored to be Vinny Del Negro’s final game as Bulls coach.

James, scored 19 points, 16 in the second half and had 10 rebounds and 9 rebounds as the Cavs put away the stubborn Bulls 4-1 in the series.

Antawn Jamison scored 25 points for Cleveland whose series with Boston will begin on Saturday.

Derrick Rose scored 31 points and Luol Deng had 26 for the Bulls.

Cavs score 108 points without LeBron, still lose to Bulls

Derrick Rose scored 24 points, Kirk Hinrich added 23 and the Bulls kept their playoff hopes alive by surviving some bad free throw shooting down the stretch to hold off the Cleveland Cavaliers Thursday night in Chicago.

LeBron James did not dress for Cleveland as he is nursing some bumps and bruises.

Chicago moved into an eighth place tie with Toronto in the Eastern Conference with one more meeting between the two teams. The Raptors hold the tiebreaker with the Bulls, but their star player, Chris Bosh is out of action due to a facial injury.

Mo Williams, who scored a season-high 35 points said, “Even without LeBron James, we gave the crowd a show. This team is deep. The fans paid those high-priced tickets. I think it was worth it.”

Luol Deng had 22 points and 10 rebounds, Joakim Noah added 17 points and 15 rebounds, and Chicago prevailed even though Rose and Deng each missed two free throws in the final 55 seconds.

Everybody knows the Cavs have the league’s best bench. Well, it just got deeper as they found another player in Sebastian Telfair who had eight points in his first appearance since the Cavaliers acquired him from the Los Angeles Clippers in a three-team deal. Telfair had been sidelined since January 20, when he injured his groin during a Clippers game against Chicago.
