DETROIT TIGERS 9  CLEVELAND INDIANS 8

Carlos Guillen scored the winning run on Indians closer Chris Perez’s wild pitch, capping a three-run ninth inning and giving Detroit the win on Sunday in Motown.

The Tigers became hust the second team since 1986 to win a nine-inning game while stranding at least 18 runners. Detroit’s 18 runners left on base matched its most since 1920.

Guillen hit a one-out RBI double in the ninth to get the Tigers within one and put runners on second and third. After Brandon Inge grounded out, Perez (0-1) issued two walks in a row to Ramon Santiago and pinch-hitter Johnny Damon to force in the tying run.

His first pitch to Scott Sizemore bounced past Lou Marson, allowing Guillent to score from third base.

Phil Coke pitched a scoreless ninth for Detroit, who trailed 7-1 heading into the bottom of the sixth inning.

Cleveland was without centerfielder Grady Sizemore, who was out of the lineup with a stiff back. But even without their All-Star in Sizemore, the Indians battered around Justin Verlander pretty good.

The Indians loaded the bases with no outs in the first inning and Travis Hafner followed with a sacrifice fly. Jhonny Peralta then struck out, Matt LaPorta walked and Luis Valbuena lifted a 1-2 pitch just inside the right-field foul pole for his first grand slam.

Verlander settled down after the 43-pitch first inning, allowing six runs and five hits in five-plus innings, but his early struggles made the loss even tougher for Cleveland because they rarely ever score more than a couple of runs off the Tigers ace pitcher.

Indians starter Jake Westbrook pitched 5 2-3 innings, giving up three runs and nine hits. He struck out seven and walked three.

Indians offensive stars include Jhonny Peralta and Shin-soo-Choo homered  and Luis Valbuena had two hits.

Detroit was led by Maggio Ordonez with two hits and two RBI’s and Miguel Cabrera went 3 for 3 which had 18 hits on the day.

GAME NOTES

* The Seattle Mariners left 18 runners on base in a 5-2 win over San Diego on June 27, 2008.  Detroit stranded 18 runners in a 10-1 loss to the Philadelphia Athletics in 1926 and again in a 12-2 loss to the A’s in 1931.

ARIZONA DIAMONDBACKS 15      PITTSBURGH PIRATES 6

The Arizona Diamondbacks scored a team-record 13 runs in the fourth inning, capped by the first homer of pitcher Edwin Jackson’s career, as the delighted their fans in Phoenix with a 15-6 win over Pittsburgh on Sunday.

Chris Young and Kelly Johnson homered in the big inning.

Edwin Jackson (1-1) went into the bottom of the fourth trailing 4-2 after giving up seven hits, but allowed only three hits in three scoreless innings after that.

Jackson had two of Arizona’s eight hits in the fourth inning and became the first pitcher to score two runs in an inning since last August 14, when Randy Wells of the Cubs did it against Pittsburgh. Jackson singled early in the fourth, then finished it off with a two-run homer. With a distance of 400 feet, his homer was the longest of Arizona’s four homers.

Catcher Chris Snyder was starting because Miguel Montero was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a right knee sprain earlier in the day, homered for Arizona and tied his career high with five RBI’s.

The Diamondbacks easily surpassed the club record of eight runs in an inning. They matched a regular-season team mark for hits, they got nine in a 2001 World Series game against the Yankees and home runs in the inning. Every D-Backs starter scored a run.

The Pittsburgh Pirates tied a team record for most runs allowed in an inning. The other times were 1890 and 1994.

Edwin Jackson, now 1-1, settled down after a rough start to win his first game with Arizona. He was an All-star last year with Detroit and was picked up in a three-team trade that sent Curtis Granderson to the Yankees.

Cleveland Indians 5 Chicago White Sox 3 in 11 (Thursday)

compiled by megasportsnews.com staff

The 2010 baseball season is only 3 games old, but Cleveland is very optimistic that they can have a decent season despite being counted out by the media and the fans.

Centerfielder Grady Sizemore is healthy again and Thursday, his three RBI’s helped the Indians beat Chicago in the Windy City, 5-3 in 11 innings.

Luis Valbuena opened the 11th with a bunt single off J.J.Putz (0-1). He went to second on Lou Marson’s sacrifice and, after Putz struck out Michael Brantley, Asdrubel Cabrera blooped a single into right field to put Cleveland ahead, 4-3. Sizemore followed with his second RBI double of the night to make it 5-3.

Jensen Lewis (1-0) worked 1 2/3 scoreless innings to earn the win.

The two pitching staffs combined for 28 strikeouts. Chicago’s Gavin Floyd had 7 of Chicago’s 16.
